Adegas Pereira D'Oliveira, commonly known as D'Oliveiras, is one of the top attractions in Funchal for wine lovers drawn to deep history and authentic Madeira flavours. Housed inside a 17th-century building in the city centre, this family-run company has been producing exceptional Madeira wines since 1850, with roots that stretch back even further through its acquired estates. The atmosphere inside the tasting rooms feels timeless, with old barrels, fragrant wood, and the sense of tradition that comes with centuries of craftsmanship.

A visit here is a highlight of any walking tour of Funchal, offering an experience that goes beyond simple sampling. You'll discover an extraordinary selection of vintage Madeiras, from approachable 5-year bottles to extremely rare Terrantez wines aged for decades. D'Oliveiras is especially known for its enormous stock of old vintages, estimated at about 1.5 million litres-an unparalleled treasure that makes this winery unique in Madeira's wine world.

History and Significance of Adegas Pereira D’Oliveira

Founded in 1850 by the Pereira D’Oliveira family, the company grew steadily through the acquisition of older wine producers, giving it historical roots that reach back to the 1820s. Its headquarters sit in one of Funchal’s oldest buildings, dating to the 1600s, adding even more depth to the sense of heritage you feel when stepping through its doors.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, D'Oliveiras strengthened its reputation by adhering to traditional Madeira winemaking methods, resisting modern trends in blended or experimental styles. Over time, the estate amassed a remarkable collection of old wines, including vintages from defunct wineries that were absorbed into the company. This makes D'Oliveiras not just a winery but also a guardian of Madeira's vinicultural history.

Today, the company produces around 150,000 litres annually. Its range spans Tinta Negra wines aged 3, 5, 10, and 15 years, as well as classic Sercial, Verdelho, Bual, Malmsey, and the esteemed Terrantez. Wines up to 10 years old follow the Estufagem process, while those aged 15 years and beyond use the traditional Canteiro method, a slow, natural ageing process that defines the finest Madeira wines.

Things to See and Do in Adegas Pereira D’Oliveira

The tasting rooms at D'Oliveiras remain one of the best places to visit in Funchal for sampling Madeira's finest wines. The historic environment adds to the charm, with wooden barrels, warm lighting, and shelves lined with beautifully packaged bottles that make ideal gifts. Staff guides explain the differences between grape varieties, production methods, and ageing techniques, making it a great introduction for newcomers and connoisseurs alike.

Visitors can taste everything from young 5-year-old bottles to rare vintages that are decades old. The Terrantez wines, in particular, are sought after due to the grape's rarity and the exceptional ageing potential it offers. "With a depth of D'Oliveira Maderia-style wines from the late 1800's through the present, of each major varietal, and special reserves, this is theplace to go if you really want to get your feet wet - and your mouth excited by the flavor profiles of the unique Madeira wines. These are fortified wines, made in a specific fashion from the 5 major grape varietals on the island, and dating back into the 1800's which allows you to really understand the aging, bottling and vinification process thoroughly.
