To commemorate the contributions of João Gonçalves Zarco, one of Madeira’s discoverers and the first Captain of Funchal, the Governing Board commissioned sculptor Francisco Franco to create a statue. Architect Cristiano da Silva was responsible for designing the foundation, adorned with allegoric figures representing key aspects of the Discoveries, including ‘Conquer,’ ‘Settlement,’ ‘Wisdom,’ and ‘Evangelisation.’

After careful consideration, the monument found its permanent place at the intersection of Avenida Arriaga and Avenida Zarco, eventually being inaugurated in 1934. An earlier version of this statue had earned the gold medal at the Iberian-American Exhibition in Seville in 1929.
