There are Illyrian fortifications on the hill above the city. It was rebuild by the Venetians in 1440, by the Ottoman in 1522. The architecture of the castle bears comes from a mix of Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman designs.
There are Ottoman buildings and a mosque to see in the castle and a Roman arch in the the tower of the south-eastern wall, and the Illyrian tower on the southern wall.
