Plönlein in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany, is a small street-corner attraction known for its split lanes, half-timbered houses, and view toward the Siebers Tower and Kobolzell Gate Tower.

It matters less as a single sight than as a compact piece of Rothenburg’s old town layout, where the cobblestones, narrow streets, and close-set buildings create the town’s best-known scene. Visitors usually come for a short stop, a photo, and a look at one of the most recognizable corners in the town. It suits travelers who enjoy walking historic streets and photographing places that are busy but still easy to read in a few minutes.

History and Significance of Plönlein

Plönlein's origins date back to the Middle Ages when Rothenburg ob der Tauber was a thriving imperial city and a key stop on important trade routes through Franconia. The name “Plönlein” derives from the Old German “plan,” meaning “small square,” a fitting description for this intimate meeting point of two ancient streets. The Siebers Tower was built around 1385 as part of the town's first line of defense, while the lower Kobolzell Gate formed part of the newer southern fortifications leading down toward the Tauber Valley.

For centuries, the Plönlein area served as a bustling crossroads for merchants, guards, and travelers entering or leaving the town. Its charm lies not in grand architecture but in its perfect balance - the timber-framed yellow house, the split road, and the twin towers framing the scene. Its appearance today has changed little since medieval times, making it one of the most recognizable and beloved images of historic Germany.

Things to See and Do at Plönlein

Plönlein is all about atmosphere and perspective. Stand at the fork where the two streets diverge to frame your perfect photo - one path leading up to the Siebers Tower and the other descending toward the Kobolzell Gate. From this vantage point, you can capture one of the most iconic views in all of Bavaria. Early morning or late evening is ideal for photography, as the light is soft and the streets are quieter.

Take time to wander through the surrounding lanes filled with quaint shops, cafés, and traditional guesthouses. Many sell handcrafted souvenirs, Christmas ornaments, and Franconian specialties. The nearby Tauber Valley viewpoint, just a short walk downhill, offers a peaceful escape with panoramic views of the river and countryside. Plönlein is also a highlight of any walking tour of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, connecting seamlessly to the town's walls, gates, and squares.

How to Get There

Plönlein is located in the southern part of Rothenburg ob der Tauber's Old Town, an easy five-minute walk from Marktplatz. The town itself is accessible by car via the A7 motorway. If you are looking to rent a car in Germany I recommend having a look at Discover Cars, first, as they compare prices and review multiple car rental agencies for you. For visitors arriving by train, Rothenburg's station connects to regional routes through Steinach, making the journey straightforward from cities like Würzburg or Nuremberg. Train schedules and bookings can be found on Omio. Once inside the walls, Rothenburg is entirely walkable - and Plönlein is best enjoyed on foot.

"I returned to Rotenburg on the Romantic Road for the first time in 47 years ago. The townscape remains the same as it was back then, a medievalwalled town, and the enchanting scenery is captivating. The German Christmas Museum has a wide selection of Christmas-related souvenirs and is a must-see. It also has many wonderful sights, such as Plönlein, Market Square, St. Jacob's Church, the city walls, and the Gärch Blacksmith Shop, making it a town worth visiting at least once. However, it is now extremely crowded with tourists, and it feels as though the simple atmosphere of the past has been lost...."

"A very pretty spot (as expected). Gets very busy during the day but in the morning it’s quiet (even at 10am it was quiet but I’d aim for earlier) soa good time for a picture without a lot of people around...."

"There is a well in front of this half timberland house. This seems to be the iconic photo in Rothenburg au der Tauber. We love this town. Themedieval wall is in tact around the city, you can walk large sections of it. We sat for some Franconian wine at Glocke, took in some museums and did some shopping. Visit the crime and punishment museum...."
