Rothenburg Rathaus in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany, is the town hall on the Marktplatz and one of the main civic buildings in the old town. Its mix of Gothic and Renaissance sections gives the façade a layered look, and the tower is easy to spot as you enter the square.

Visitors come here to see the building up close, step inside the public areas, and climb the tower for views over the rooftops and the Tauber Valley. It works well for travelers who like historic buildings, town squares, and a short stop that adds context to a walk through Rothenburg’s center. Those focused mainly on shopping or museums can treat it as a quick visit rather than a long one.

History and Significance of Rothenburg Town Hall

Construction of the Rothenburg Town Hall began in the 13th century, at a time when Rothenburg ob der Tauber was emerging as one of the most prosperous cities in Franconia. The original Gothic section, completed around 1250, formed the core of the building and served as the seat of municipal government. In the 16th century, a Renaissance-style extension was added, blending beautifully with the older structure and giving the Rathaus its distinctive two-part appearance. The tower, soaring over 60 meters high, became a powerful symbol of the town's autonomy and influence during the Middle Ages.

Over the centuries, the building has survived wars, fires, and political change, remaining a cornerstone of civic life. Its restoration after damage in the 19th and 20th centuries was carried out with great care, ensuring that visitors today can still experience the artistry and atmosphere of medieval Rothenburg. The Rathaus stands as both a testament to the city’s resilience and a proud monument to its independent spirit.

"This is not closed!! We just climbed the tower in July 2025 and enjoyed the great view of the city. The Town Hall Tower is accessed through the mainportal of the Town Hall on Rothenburg's Market Square. Once you start climbing the tower, you are climbing up ladder type steps (not spiral steps like in other towers). There is a limited amount of people allowed up to the top at any given time (watch for the green light/red light when looking to proceed). You will need to pay once you are about half way up the tower...so don't expect this to be a free trip. Costs are:nAdults 4,00 €nChildren under 14 years 2,00 €nGroups of 10 or more people 3,00 €nSeverely disabled people 2,00 €nFamilies (2 adults + 2 or more children) 10,00 €..."
