The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga, Portugal, is a hilltop pilgrimage site and religious complex set on the slopes of Mount Espinho. It is best known for the long Baroque staircase that rises through chapels, fountains, and sculpted landings before reaching the church at the summit.

Visitors come for the layered experience: a formal ascent, detailed stonework, quiet gardens, and wide views over Braga and the surrounding hills. The site suits travelers interested in religious architecture, scenic walks, and places where the setting is as important as the building itself. It also works for shorter visits, since the funicular makes the climb easier if needed.

History and Significance of the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte

The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte was developed primarily in the Baroque style, part of a broader European movement of creating Sacri Monti - sacred mountains that combined nature, art, and devotion. These sanctuaries were promoted by the Catholic Church during the Counter-Reformation, following the Council of Trent in the 16th century, as a response to the Protestant Reformation.

The complex as we know it today began to take shape in the late 18th century. Its Via Crucis, or Way of the Cross, ascends the western slope of Mount Espinho through a series of chapels that depict the Passion of Christ. Along the route, pilgrims encounter fountains, allegorical statues, and terraced gardens, all designed to inspire contemplation. The grand finale is the church at the summit, completed between 1784 and 1811, its granite façade accented by whitewashed plaster and framed by sculptural stonework.

The sanctuary's most iconic feature is the Stairway of the Five Senses, a monumental Baroque staircase symbolizing the purification of the soul through sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch. This artistic and spiritual journey makes Bom Jesus do Monte not only a masterpiece of design but also a living expression of faith.

Things to See and Do in the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte

Begin your visit at the base of the hill, where the stairway begins its dramatic ascent through lush greenery and sculpted terraces. The climb - all 580 steps - is both a physical and spiritual experience. Many pilgrims still ascend on their knees as an act of devotion, but for those seeking an easier route, the funicular provides a memorable alternative.

The Via Crucis unfolds through a series of chapels containing expressive sculptures depicting scenes from Christ's Passion. Each level reveals new artistic details - fountains representing the senses, stone balustrades, and symbolic motifs - all framed by manicured gardens and woodland. The journey culminates at the church, whose neoclassical façade and twin bell towers stand proudly above Braga. Inside, visitors can admire intricate altarpieces and painted ceilings that mirror the artistry of the sanctuary's exterior.

The surrounding park offers shaded pathways and serene viewpoints ideal for reflection or a picnic. From the top terrace, the panoramic view across Braga and the Minho valley is nothing short of breathtaking, especially at sunset when the city glows beneath the golden sky.

How to Get There

The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte is located about 5 km from Braga's historic centre. The easiest way to reach it is by bus: take line 2 of the TUB (Urban Transports of Braga) from the Liberdade (25th Abril) stop on Avenida da Liberdade and get off at the final stop, Bom Jesus. The journey takes around 20 minutes.

If you're traveling by car, there is a free car park at the foot of Mount Espinho, near the start of the stairway. If you are looking to rent a car in Portugal I recommend having a look at Discover Cars, first, as they compare prices and review multiple car rental agencies for you. "We visited this amazing sanctuary as part of a small tour group so had a guide who was able to explain the history and significance of the site tous. It really helped with the experience. The sanctuary is situated on a hill way above the city of Braga. It consists of a large church, sixteen external chapels, fountains, statues, a hotel and a funicular. Plus 550+ steps to get up or down (or you can drive up there). The church is well worth a visit and I highly recommend having a look into the chapels as they contain some wonderful religious statuary. Very well worth a visit. If you don’t have mobility issues, I recommend walking down the steps. They’re in good condition. And you get some great views down to the city and up to the church plus thee are a number of small fountains each with special meaning...."

"It's an amazing construction and is beautifully set into manicured gardens just outside Braga. It is lovely to walk around and is a site thatvisitors to Fatima include in their itenary. Tough going in a wheelchair, but you can get into the main church. If you do visit and you have a car, go the extra few km up the hill to Samiero...."

"We travelled from Porto to Braga by CP train (about 67 minutes), then took a Bolt to Bom Jesus do Monte. Since it was low season, a car arrivedwithin 3–4 minutes and the ride took around 13–15 minutes. One thing to note: the drop‑off point is not directly at the Basilica. You need to walk downhill for about 6–8 minutes to reach the Basilica of Bom Jesus. It was raining heavily on the day we visited. We originally pla ed to take the funicular down, but since it has no doors and the rain blocked the view, we decided to take an Uber instead. For those interested in the funicular: a single trip costs €2.50 and a return ticket is €4. It runs at :25 and :55 every hour. There is a ticket machine next to it that accepts credit cards. To be honest, the church itself didn’t feel particularly special to me (perhaps because I’m not believing in any religions). For our return trip, we set the pick‑up point at Templo Hotel, which is right next to the Basilica. The driver mentioned there was a €1 fee to enter the area. Since the rain was very heavy, we agreed. Moreover, because it was raining, it took us 17 minutes to get the Uber...."
