Ribeiro Frio, meaning “Cold Stream,” is a peaceful mountain village located about 15 kilometres from Funchal. Surrounded by lush Laurissilva forest and thriving with endemic species, it is one of the best places to visit from Funchal for travellers seeking nature and tranquillity. The village is known for its trout farm and as a starting point for several popular levada walks, including the beautiful Vereda dos Balcões (PR11), a scenic and accessible trail leading to one of Madeira’s great viewpoints.

At 860 metres above sea level, Ribeiro Frio enjoys a cool, fresh mountain climate. Its surrounding forest is filled with native species such as Laurus novocanariensis and Erica madeirensis, while birdlife includes the Madeira firecrest, chaffinch, and the increasingly rare trocaz pigeon. This peaceful blend of flora, fauna, and natural scenery makes Ribeiro Frio a highlight of any walking tour of Madeira.

History and Significance of Ribeiro Frio

Ribeiro Frio developed as a resting place along the old mountain roads that linked the north and south of Madeira. The village became well-known for its trout farm, established decades ago as part of the island's freshwater conservation and fishery programmes. The flowing, cold waters of the surrounding streams created perfect conditions for breeding trout, and today visitors can observe tanks and channels filled with fish at different stages of growth.

The village is deeply tied to the Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that represents one of the largest surviving remnants of ancient subtropical forest in the world. As a gateway to several levada trails, Ribeiro Frio offers a glimpse into Madeira's traditional irrigation network, a centuries-old engineering system that shaped rural life across the island.

Things to See and Do in Ribeiro Frio

A visit to Ribeiro Frio often begins with the trout farm, where visitors can observe the flowing water channels and learn about local aquaculture practices. The village's mountain restaurants offer freshly prepared trout dishes, adding a culinary dimension to the experience.

The most popular activity is walking the Vereda dos Balcões (PR11), an easy and rewarding trail through the forest that ends at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking some of Madeira's highest peaks. Along this route, birdwatchers frequently spot the Madeira firecrest, chaffinch, and occasionally the elusive trocaz pigeon.

For those seeking longer hikes, Ribeiro Frio also connects to additional levada trails such as Levada do Furado, offering further exploration of Madeira's green interior.

What Other Travellers Say...

Reviews Summary

PR10 Levada do Furado – Ribeiro Frio – Portela is a tree-lined levada path near ER103 in Funchal that winds through native forest, tunnels and past small waterfalls, offering valley and mountain views and occasional farm areas with grazing sheep; the trail is mostly flat after an initial incline, well marked and not technically difficult, though some narrow ledge sections lack railings and the full out-and-back is long (about 22 km), so many visitors walk shorter loops or turn around after 5–10 km; parking is free at the Ribeiro Frio side, the route can be quiet and peaceful, and mornings can be chilly so a jacket is recommended.

"Loved PR10. Its one of the underrated hikes on Madeira. We could not finish it completely because its 11km and back. We did 5km of the trail and 5kmback. There a couple of waterfalls and views and no people. Parking is free and the PR10 is close to PR11. For the 10km we hiked we did 3 hours. Its mostly flat terrain and not difficult at all. Really enjoyed the quiet hike on this one...."

"Nice quiet hike, with beautiful landscape. Not to challenging as it's pretty flat with some narrow spots. Slightly monotonous at some points. Butdefinitely worth checking out!..."

"Beautiful and varied hike with a bit of everything Madeira is known for! 🌿⛰️ The PR10 starts with a path that can feel a little steep on the way up,but once you’re higher it flattens out into a very pleasant levada walk. Along the way you pass through dense forest, hear birdsong, and cross streams with small waterfalls that make the hike extra refreshing. One of the highlights is reaching the farm area where you’ll often see sheep grazing — it gives the hike a peaceful, rural charm and a feeling of stepping back in time. The views over valleys and mountains are fantastic, especially in the morning when the mist slowly lifts. It can get chilly early in the day, so bring a jacket, especially if you start in the morning. The trail is well-marked and not too difficult after the initial incline, making it a great option for hikers who want both challenge and relaxation...."
