Piazza Grande in Gubbio, one of the most striking examples of medieval urban planning, began construction in 1321. It was designed at the heart of the city, with significant engineering efforts to support the expansive roof structures and the surrounding buildings, which appear almost monumental in scale compared to the rest of the historic center.

The Palazzo dei Consoli is the only fully completed building from this period, dominating the city’s skyline and establishing a powerful presence in relation to the “Platea Communis,” where the Cathedral stands. The decline of municipal autonomy with the rise of the Gabrielli family in 1350 led to the cessation of further construction; as a result, the Palazzo Pretorio remained unfinished, and the square’s substructures were only completed in 1482.

This space is highly dramatic, offering a scenic projection toward the countryside, with a panoramic view that unfolds from one side of the square.
