The long building, featuring an arcade and situated next to the Church of Santa Maria dei Laici, was originally St. Mary’s Hospital, established in 1326 by the confraternity bearing the same name.

In 1505, other hospitals in the town were merged with it, and the building became known as the “Spedal Grande,” a name that remained in use until 1628. The facade still displays a fresco of the “Madonna between St. Peter and St. Paul” (1473), painted by a pupil of Nelli. As early as the mid-15th century, the Woolworkers’ Guild sought to construct covered areas above the hospital where they could “stretch” pieces of cloth to the desired size. After prolonged disputes, these “stretching loggias” were finally built at the beginning of the 17th century.
