Cavour Square is the main square of Como and the vibrant heart of the city’s historical center. It offers stunning views of Lake Como and the surrounding hills, making it an ideal spot for people-watching, festivals, and cultural events.

In the Middle Ages, this area was a swampy and undeveloped tract of land, but it transformed into a bustling urban public space in the 19th century. The northern side of Cavour Square runs along the shores of Lake Como, where visitors can sit on benches and watch boats gliding across the sparkling water, with the Faro Voltiano lighthouse visible in the forested hills beyond.

The square is surrounded by notable buildings that are worth admiring. On the western edge stands the 1846 Hotel Metropole Suisse, while the eastern side is lined with colorful Italianate buildings housing cafes, restaurants, and gelato shops. Street performers often add to the lively atmosphere here.

Cavour Square frequently hosts fairs, concerts, and markets. In June, you can enjoy music from the 1930s and 1940s at the Swing Crash Festival, while in December, the Christmas Market offers a chance to browse stalls filled with local artisan crafts and souvenirs.

The square is conveniently located just a five-minute walk from the train station, and it’s easy to reach Como Cathedral from here. A stroll along the waterfront will take you to the Funicular Como-Brunate, where you can ride the mountain railway up to the picturesque village of Brunate.
