Como–Brunate Funicular
Railway in Como
The Como-Brunate Funicular connects the towns of Brunate at the top and Como at the base. This historic line has been in operation since 1894. In August 2011, the funicular was updated with new cars, each 39 feet long and capable of carrying 81 passengers. The journey takes just seven minutes, reaching a maximum speed of 9.8 feet per second.
The lower station is conveniently located near the Como city center, close to the waterfront. The line stretches 3,556 feet, with 427 feet passing through a tunnel. After emerging from the tunnel, passengers are treated to breathtaking views of Lake Como and the city below. The funicular also offers two intermediate stops upon request.
At the top, passengers arrive in the heart of the picturesque village of Brunate. Brunate is a small, ancient, and somewhat enigmatic town, steeped in stories and legends. One of its main attractions is the panoramic view of the city, the lake, and the Italian Alps. Though home to only about 1,800 residents, the population swells dramatically during the summer months.
