Oukaimeden is in the High Atlas Mountains (Western) of Morocco and is a high-altitude ski resort and mountain area, set well above the plains south of Marrakech. At around 2,600 to 3,200 metres, it stands out for ski lifts, winter snow, and wide views over bare ridgelines and valleys.

The area matters because it combines seasonal sport with a working mountain landscape. Visitors notice the cold air, rough roads, simple facilities, and the shift from snow-covered slopes in winter to walking ground and grazing land in summer. It suits travellers who want skiing, hiking, or a short mountain stop rather than a polished resort experience.

History and Significance of Oukaïmeden

Oukaïmeden has long been recognised as one of Africa’s highest ski resorts, established in the mid-20th century when Europeans living in Morocco sought winter recreation in the High Atlas. Its exceptional altitude and cold winters made it ideal for skiing, and today it remains the country’s top snow destination.

The resort sits in a region traditionally inhabited by Amazigh communities, who continue to maintain grazing land and pastoral activities across the surrounding slopes. Winter tourism and summer trekking have added new economic opportunities to the area, blending modern recreation with long-standing cultural traditions.

The dramatic landscapes around Oukaïmeden-including rocky plateaus, snowy ridges, and wide-open valleys-have also made it a hub for hikers, mountaineers, and visitors on their way to Toubkal National Park.

Things to See and Do in Oukaïmeden

During winter, the main attraction is skiing. Oukaïmeden’s lifts reach over 3,000 metres, offering the highest ski runs in North Africa. Rental facilities and basic instruction are available, though conditions and lift operations vary depending on snowfall.

In summer, the resort transforms into a beautiful hiking area. Trails weave across alpine meadows, rocky ridges, and remote valleys, making it popular for trekking, rock climbing, and mountain photography. Clear summer weather and cool temperatures add to its appeal.

Visitors also enjoy exploring the Berber villages surrounding the resort, where traditional stone homes and terraced fields contrast with the dramatic alpine scenery. This combination of culture and landscape offers a memorable High Atlas experience.

"We had a great couple of hours just outside of Oukaimden seeing the prehistoric rock art. Quite a marvelous experience particularly after theovernight snow. We were very reliant on TransKesh providing us with a driver and vehicle to get us up in to the Atlas Mountains and then for finding us a guide when we reached the spot we needed to be. Whilst it's not impossible to find some of the art oneself we very much benefited from having a Berber guide as the information boards were unsurprisingly very weathered (I should have thought of this). Our guide, Ismail if I remember his name correctly, could speak enough French and English, as well as Spanish and German. Enough to not only lead us to the art put also help us understand the conservation pressures for the art work in a farming environment outside of the area protected for its nature. We are losing art and culture, take time to see it whilst you can. Do use a guide and put money back in to the local economy. And tread lightly so as not to add to the erosion. Certainly not a cheap day out being about 1.5-2hrs out of Marrakesh but well worth the Euros; we should have been better prepared for the cost of the guide.nand then it was off to Lunch.nsorry I can not comment on the village/ski station...."

"We decided not to drive to the waterfalls at Setti Fatma Because the narrow winding road is so heavy with traffic: cars, motor cycles, scooters, pedestrians and road works, Views are inhibited by stall after stall selling pottery, baskets or carpets. Driving is as dusty as it is stressful. Instead, we took the mountainous road to Oukaimeden, a ski resort. A challenging drive with heavy roadworks, men and machines removing heavy rockfall, building walls, and widening the road. Little traffic, apart from, trucks and bulldozers. Spectacular views accompanied this adventure. And, imagine our astonishment, when we found ourselves at the ski slopes, and the tourist village, closed for the summer, to find a little hotel, designed to look like a Swiss chalet, not only open but able to offer us a delicious coffee creme and apple pie...."
