The Old Shipyard was constructed in 1228 during the reign of Sultan Alaaddin Keykubad I, one of the most powerful rulers of the Seljuk Empire. Designed as both a shipbuilding and repair facility, it symbolised the Seljuks' growing dominance over the Mediterranean and their efforts to strengthen their naval power. The shipyard consists of five interconnected vaulted chambers, each measuring about 7 metres wide and 42 metres deep, built using finely cut limestone blocks.

Strategically positioned to receive maximum sunlight, the shipyard allowed workers to build and maintain wooden ships year-round. A small mosque, storage areas, and a guardroom once stood nearby, supporting daily operations. The Seljuks even added a defensive wall and watchtower to protect the facility, ensuring its importance as a centre of trade and military strength. Today, it remains the only surviving Seljuk shipyard on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, standing as a monument to Alanya's maritime heritage.
