Mavrovo National Park is the largest and one of the most ecologically diverse national parks in North Macedonia, located in the western part of the country near the Albanian border. Spanning over 710 square kilometers, it encompasses three major mountain ranges: Bistra, Korab, and Šar, offering a dramatic landscape of alpine peaks, deep canyons, glacial lakes, and dense forests. The park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with activities ranging from hiking and mountain biking in summer to skiing in winter at the Mavrovo Ski Center.

At the heart of the park lies Mount Korab, the tallest peak in both North Macedonia and Albania, standing at 2,764 meters (9,068 feet). It straddles the border between the two countries and is a popular destination for experienced hikers and climbers. The ascent to Korab is challenging but rewarding, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The peak is accessible from both the Macedonian and Albanian sides, with trails leading through rugged terrain, alpine meadows, and remote villages.

Mavrovo’s natural beauty is matched by its rich biodiversity. The park is home to the critically endangered Balkan lynx, as well as brown bears, wolves, wild boars, and chamois. Birdwatchers can spot golden eagles, griffon vultures, and rock partridges. The Radika River winds through the park, carving picturesque gorges and feeding into Lake Mavrovo, an artificial lake that reflects the surrounding mountains and forests like a mirror.

Cultural highlights within the park include traditional villages like Galichnik and Lazaropole, known for their stone houses and vibrant festivals. One of the most iconic landmarks is the Church of St. Nicholas, partially submerged in Lake Mavrovo, creating a hauntingly beautiful scene.
