Lake Fierza
Reservoir in Kukës

Fierza Reservoir, also known as Lake Fierza, is a vast artificial lake in northeastern Albania, created in 1978 by damming the Drin River. Spanning approximately 72.6 square kilometers, it is the largest reservoir in Albania and extends into Kosovo. The lake reaches depths of up to 128 meters and is surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes, making it a significant feature of the region’s geography.
The primary purpose of the reservoir is hydroelectric power generation. The Fierza Hydroelectric Power Station, situated at the dam, is one of Albania’s most important electricity producers, contributing significantly to the national grid . The construction of the dam led to the submergence of the old town of Kukës, necessitating the relocation and reconstruction of the town on higher ground.
Beyond its industrial role, Fierza Reservoir offers considerable potential for tourism and recreation. The lake’s serene waters and surrounding natural beauty make it an ideal spot for activities such as boating, fishing, and hiking. The area is also rich in cultural heritage, with nearby attractions like Peca Castle, an ancient fortress believed to have been built in the 6th century BC.
Visitors to Fierza Reservoir can enjoy the tranquil environment and explore the unique blend of natural and historical sites. The lake’s scenic vistas and the opportunity to engage with local traditions and history make it a noteworthy destination for those traveling through northern Albania.
