The Ksamil Islands are one of the best places to visit in Ksamil, a cluster of four uninhabited islets shimmering just offshore in the bright Ionian Sea. Reached easily by kayak, paddleboard, or a short boat ride, they offer a rare blend of white sand, turquoise waters, and peaceful coves that feel wonderfully remote. These islands embody the essence of the Albanian Riviera: wild beauty, relaxed rhythms, and unforgettable sunsets.

Each island brings its own charm, whether it's the Twin Islands joined by a sandbar at low tide or the more distant, forested islets perfect for quiet swims and sunlit solitude. The warm, crystal-clear water surrounding them is ideal for snorkeling, floating, or simply gazing across at the hills of Butrint National Park and the distant outline of Corfu.

History and Significance of the Ksamil Islands

While the Ksamil Islands have never been inhabited, they have long been tied to the cultural landscape of southern Albania. Their sheltered position in the Ionian Sea made them natural stopovers for local fishermen and families from nearby Ksamil village.

In the communist period, Albania's coastline was heavily restricted, and only locals had limited access to the islands. After the country opened in the 1990s, the Ksamil Islands quickly became a symbol of the “new Albanian Riviera,” attracting travelers with their Caribbean-like waters and pristine natural setting.

Their proximity to Butrint National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, further strengthens their cultural and environmental importance, forming part of a protected marine and coastal ecosystem.

Things to See and Do in the Ksamil Islands

Kayaking is one of the most enjoyable ways to reach the islands, letting you glide over glassy turquoise water. Paddleboards and small motorboats are also widely available on Ksamil Beach.

Once ashore, you can explore hidden coves, swim through warm shallows filled with schools of silver fish, or relax on smooth rocks with panoramic sea views. The Twin Islands create a natural sandbar passage at low tide, forming one of the Riviera’s most photogenic spots.

In summer, small seasonal beach bars offer drinks and snacks, but most visitors bring a picnic to enjoy a peaceful day surrounded by nature. Sunbathing, snorkelling, and leisurely swims between the islets are the highlights of any visit.

What Other Travellers Say...

Reviews Summary

Twin Islands of Ksamil, Ksamil, Albania is a small pebble beach spot reached by short boat rides from the main Ksamil beach; visitors praise the crystal-clear water and vibrant colors, and often go later in the afternoon or at sunset when it's quieter. Boats or water taxis run frequently and can be hired per person or by the hour for a group, though some warn only cash is accepted and that boats sometimes charge about 20 per person. Expect limited facilities and low-quality sunbeds, variable cleanliness with some trash in corners, and limited places to lie down during busy summer periods, so many recommend timing your visit for quieter hours or treating it as a quick stop by water taxi.

"It is a nice pebble beach, clear water, and some sunbeds to chill on. We went a bit later in in the afternoon, so it was not crowded. Boats go to theisland every hour (we paid €20 per person), and they'll pick you up whenever you're ready to head back...."

"This is a very nice spot but this is the way you should approach the experience:nYou take some kind of transportation here at end of the afternoon, you take a dive, swim, and watch the sunset. Beach will be almost empty at this time and the sunset is amazing from here. There is trash yes, but it’s on the “corners” and not on the areas you walk. Basically, disregard all of the bad comments and just come and take a beach day somewhere else...."
