Hadrian’s Wall – Milecastle 74– Burgh Marsh
Roman Mile Castle in Carlisle
Milecastle 74 (Burgh Marsh) was one of a series of Milecastles or small fortlets built at intervals of approximately one Roman mile along Hadrian’s Wall.
Not investigated, there are no visible remains. The mile fort was probably near the Burgh-by-Sands-Drumburgh road. Its presumed position could only be determined from measuring points at neighboring fortifications and is located in the wet meadows of Burgh Marsh, where no remains of Hadrian’s Wall have yet been found.
