The Faro Voltiano rises high above Como as one of the region's most inspiring landmarks, a graceful octagonal lighthouse dedicated to the scientist Alessandro Volta. Built in 1927 and perched atop San Maurizio in Brunate, it overlooks the city, the lake, and the surrounding mountains from a dramatic vantage point. It stands today as one of the top attractions in Como for travelers seeking stunning viewpoints, natural beauty, and a meaningful connection to Volta's legacy.

By day, the lighthouse rewards visitors with unforgettable views across Lake Como, the Pre-Alps, and even the distant peaks of the Alps. By night, it transforms into a luminous beacon shining alternating lights of white, red, and green-an elegant tribute to Italy and the man who helped illuminate the modern world. The journey to this lighthouse is often visited on walking tours of Como, thanks to its blend of heritage and scenic immersion.

History and Significance of Faro Voltiano

Faro Voltiano was constructed in 1927 to commemorate the centenary of Alessandro Volta's death. Designed by engineer Gabriele Giussani, the structure stands 29 meters tall and mirrors the elegance of early 20th-century Italian engineering. Its octagonal form adds a sense of harmony and balance, fitting for a monument dedicated to a scientist whose discoveries reshaped the understanding of electricity.

The lighthouse's symbolic role extends beyond its daytime vistas. At night, its beams shine white, red, and green-the colors of the Italian flag-across Como and the surrounding valley. This illumination reinforces Volta's significance not only as a scientist but as a national symbol of ingenuity and progress.

Faro Voltiano also complements other memorials dedicated to Volta around Como, such as the Tempio Voltiano and the Life Electric sculpture. Together, they form a meaningful sequence of tributes that highlight the profound impact of Volta's work on both science and Italy's cultural identity.

Things to See and Do in Faro Voltiano

Climbing the lighthouse is the highlight of any visit. The interior spiral staircase leads to an upper terrace where breathtaking 360-degree views unfold. On clear days, you can see the winding arms of Lake Como, the forested ridges of the Pre-Alps, and the dramatic peaks of the Alps rising in the distance.

The lighthouse’s base is also a lovely spot for photography, with panoramic terraces offering views even without climbing to the top. The surrounding area is rich in greenery, villas, and scenic paths, making it a perfect place for leisurely exploration.

At dusk, consider staying to witness the lighthouse’s nighttime display. The alternating tricolored beams cast a soft glow over the valley, creating a magical ambiance that feels both peaceful and celebratory-a fitting homage to Volta.

Reviews Summary

Faro Voltiano in Brunate sits above Lake Como and rewards the roughly 30–45 minute steep walk from the funicular top with sweeping panoramic views of the lake and the Alps at sunset; the lighthouse itself is often closed to the public, but the viewing area around its base is excellent and there are water fountains and a small playground along the way — bring water, a towel for hot days, and expect a strenuous climb (a bus is available from the funicular top if you prefer not to walk), plus a nearby café for refreshments.

"Note: this viewpoint is very much open, just the lighthouse itself is temporarily closed! Definitely worth going up, I would highly recommendit...but it's not an easy hike by any stretch of the imagination. I'm fairly fit and was covered in sweat by the top. Some very steep sections, saw many people give up halfway up. Definitely take some tissue/towel if you're coming on a hot day to wipe off the sweat! Pictures include some views seen along the way :)..."
