The Graça Morais Contemporary Art Centre is one of Bragança's most dynamic cultural landmarks, blending cutting-edge architecture with world-class contemporary art. Designed by acclaimed architect Eduardo Souto Moura-recipient of the 2011 Pritzker Prize-the centre opened in 2008 and has since become a cultural catalyst for the city. Its striking, minimalist design contrasts beautifully with Bragança's historic fabric, making it one of the must-see places in Bragança for anyone interested in modern creativity.

Inside, the centre offers a rich program of temporary exhibitions by both national and international artists, often in collaboration with major institutions around the world. Seven permanent galleries are dedicated to the renowned local artist Graça Morais, whose work captures the identity, struggles, and spirit of the Trás-os-Montes region. This spot is a highlight of any walking tour of Bragança, not only for its exhibitions but also for its inviting garden and relaxed terrace café-perfect for reflecting on the art you've just experienced.

History and Significance of Graça Morais Contemporary Art Centre

The centre was inaugurated in 2008 as part of Bragança’s effort to promote cultural revitalisation and celebrate contemporary artistic expression. Souto Moura’s architectural design plays a key role: bold, geometric, and deeply respectful of light, space, and materiality. The building carefully integrates with the surrounding urban landscape while asserting a modern identity.

Its establishment marked a major milestone for the city, placing Bragança on Portugal's contemporary art map. The dedication of seven galleries to Graça Morais-an artist known internationally for her powerful depictions of rural life and human resilience-anchors the museum strongly in local culture while connecting it to global artistic conversations.

"Great museum with Souto Moura’s signature and located in a good area. The exhibits are great, even though they could use the space better. You canreally get to know the artist Graça Morais through this visit. When I visited it there were two artists on display, one of them being Graça Morais. The price to visit it is very cheap considering the extent of the visit...."
