Cat Ba National Park is one of the top attractions in Cat Ba Island and often visited on walking tours of Cat Ba Island's jungle trails. Covering most of the island's landmass and part of its coastal waters, the park is one of the must-see places in Cat Ba for nature lovers, trekkers, and wildlife enthusiasts. Its dramatic limestone peaks, dense forests, hidden valleys, and rare primates make it an unforgettable stop for travellers exploring the Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay region.

History and Significance of Cat Ba National Park

Established to protect the island's fragile ecosystems, Cat Ba National Park spans 263 square kilometres, including 90 square kilometres of inshore waters. It forms the terrestrial heart of the Cat Ba Archipelago, which contains 367 islands scattered across the northeastern coast of Vietnam.

The landscape is dominated by ancient limestone karst formations - a geological continuation of the Ha Long Bay system - shaped over millions of years. These craggy hills and deep valleys host an astonishing variety of species, with over 1,500 plant types, including 118 tree species and 160 medicinal plants.

Just as significant is the wildlife: 32 species of mammals, 20 kinds of reptiles and amphibians, and 78 bird species. The rarest of all is the white-headed langur, one of the world’s most endangered primates, found almost exclusively in this park. Its survival underscores the global importance of Cat Ba’s conservation efforts.

Today, the UNESCO World Heritage designation highlights the park's exceptional landscape and ecological value within the greater Ha Long-Lan Ha Bay region.

Things to See and Do in Cat Ba National Park

Cat Ba National Park is one of the best places to visit in Cat Ba for adventurous travellers. Trekking is the park's biggest highlight, with trails ranging from short jungle walks to full-day hikes across limestone ridges.

Shorter routes lead through dense forest draped over rugged hilltops, while longer treks reach remote viewpoints and hidden valleys. Along the way, it’s not uncommon to spot macaque monkeys, squirrels, deer, or civets. With a bit of luck - and a keen eye - visitors may glimpse the elusive white-headed langur.

The rugged landscape also includes caves, mangrove patches, and areas of primary forest that offer insight into the island’s untouched ecosystems. Bird watchers will find abundant species among the canopy, especially at dawn.

For those combining their visit with a cruise, the park's karst peaks rise in dramatic formations above Lan Ha Bay, making it a great place to explore the region's land-sea connection.

"🌿 Cat Ba National Park – Amazing Experience! 🌿nCat Ba National Park was absolutely amazing. The hike up to Ngu Lam Peak was a bit tough at times, but100% worth the effort. The views from the top were out of this world – lush green mountains, deep valleys, and scenery that feels untouched. If you’re visiting Cat Ba Island and enjoy nature or hiking, this is a must-do. Just bring water, good shoes, and be ready for a climb. Totally unforgettable experience!..."

"It's possible to hike the trek alone without a guide to Viet Hai Village, but the path is challenging, good shoes, fitness and hiking experiencewould be good, some bits need to be climbed and throughout thick jungle, watch daylight hours! Takes about 2-3 hours. Ask the woman by the first restaurant after the path ends for a boat taxi back to cat ba, her sister will come pick you up in a small old fisher boat at the harbour 4km away from the village (1 hour walk), best experience to see the iconic islands and floating fisher village without some overcrowded tourist boat tour...."

"We did the full day hike with a guide (you could easily do this hike without a guide - the path is very obvious), however I would recommend a guidebecause what would otherwise be a pleasant walk through the jungle becomes an educational experience. Phuc (our guide) was able to spot and then describe the behaviour of a number of animals that we would have simply have walked past without noticing. He also had an in-depth knowledge of the uses of many plant species including my favourite: the colourful and appetising looking, one time fruit. So named because you only get to eat it once - as it is fatal. The hike is strenuous and requires the use of hands to scramble over the rocky stretches - trainers are sufficient when it is dry but would advise against it in the rain (to provide context we are moderately fit 60 year olds). After 'summiting' the 5 peaks on the route we stopped for lunch at Viet Hi village. Here you have the opportunity to have fish nibble the skin off your feet while you are nibbling on your overpriced lunch. We were then provided with bicycles to explore the fields around the village (which is itself in an amazing setting) and then enjoyed a downhill ride to the harbour where a speed boat took us out to a floating fishing village. Included in our tour was the use of kayaks to paddle around the various bays and inlets of Lan Ha Bay as the sun started to set - magical. The speed boat then took us back to the jetty with a golf cart transfer to our hotel. ps Keep an eye out on the way back as we were lucky enough to see a troop of the critically endangered golden-headed langurs on an island. All of the above (excluding lunch) was $21! One of the best days we have had during our multiple visits to Vietnam...."
