Cannon Fort is one of the top attractions in Cat Ba Island and often visited on walking tours of Cat Ba Town and its surrounding hills. Sitting high above the harbour, it is one of the must-see places in Cat Ba for travellers who want a blend of history, scenery, and adventure. The climb is rewarding, the viewpoints unforgettable, and the preserved wartime structures give a powerful insight into Vietnam's past.

History and Significance of Cannon Fort

Cannon Fort was originally constructed by the French in the late 19th century, who recognised Cat Ba's strategic position overlooking the approaches to Ha Long Bay and the Gulf of Tonkin. Its elevated vantage point made it an ideal site for monitoring maritime movement and defending the coastline.

During the Vietnam War, the North Vietnamese Army repurposed the fort as a major lookout and defensive outpost. From this height, soldiers could track American naval operations and coordinate defensive strategies. Extensive tunnels, observation rooms, and bunkers were built into the hillside, turning the fort into a vital stronghold during years of intense conflict. Today, these structures stand as a powerful testament to the island’s wartime role.

Things to See and Do in Cannon Fort

Cannon Fort is one of the best places to visit in Cat Ba for panoramic views and historical exploration. Visitors can walk through the old tunnels, examine preserved artillery, and explore underground bunkers that once served as command posts. A small museum offers deeper context on the fort's strategic importance during the Vietnam War.

The highlight, however, is the summit. From here, travellers can see Cat Ba Town, the harbour, and the spectacular karst formations of Lan Ha Bay stretching toward Ha Long Bay. This spot is one of the best places to see in Cat Ba at sunset, when the limestone towers glow gold and fishing boats drift below in calm waters. Photographers regard this viewpoint as one of the top sights in Cat Ba.

Reviews Summary

Cannon Fort in Cát Bà sits above the gulf and is known for panoramic viewpoints; visitors report the official fort area is often closed or gated, with occasional informal fees requested at the entrance, but there are alternative routes—a dirt/paved stair path by a small scooter parking lot or a trail past a café and telephone tower—that lead to rocky natural viewpoints popular for sunset and photos; some note abandoned structures nearby and wildlife like wild boars and snakes, and others found the views rewarding even without accessing the formal museum area.

"Due to typhoon this area is closed for a year. When riding scooter we were stopped with other riders by the staff at flamingo hotel. Instead of theca on fort, we parked outside flamingo hotel and walked to the right along the hills to watch the sunset from a more beautiful spot. See pics! There was a police man asking for 10k per bike, which I think was a scam but so cheap to park up and see the views...."

"We walked up to the gate but when we arrived there at 12:45, the gate was closed. We took the stairs recommended in other reviews and arrived at abunker with an amazing view. Once we got down at 13:15, the gate was being opened by the man seen on different photo’s and he was indeed asking for 50.000 VND. It might have been worth it if you wanted to visit the (abandoned) museum but we were happy with the views we had already seen...."

"A road at the top of Cat Ba town leads up to the Fort entrance. Could be walked from town quite easily but I went by rented moped at sunset time. Atthe top there are big metal gates which are locked. Security but was empty, looks abandoned but could had just been because today is a National holiday. Turn around from the gates and there are steps leading up the steep hill. They are blocked by a fence but it’s easy to walk around it. At the top is a tall antenna and a short scramble over rocks leads higher up to wonderful views over Cat Ba town, its harbour and further panoramic views behind to the sea and islands. It’s a free and easy climb. Worth it for the views...."

"just like the other reviews. DO NOT go to the google maps fort ca on location beyond any gates. There’s a dirt/slight paved steps path on the left ofthe road next to a small scooter parking lot. Went up with no problem or fees and enjoyed a stu ing sunset!..."

"Ca on Fort has been permanently closed, we went yesterday and there’s no real way to get in unless you want to summit a locked gate topped by spikesx HOWEVER, there is an incredible (but informal) viewpoint that you can access along the road to ca on fort. The entrance to the stairs is by the cafe, and if you do a bit of climbing up past the telephone tower you get to an awesome natural rocky viewpoint for a panoramic view of the entire gulf...."
