Rising above Gubbio on the slopes of Mount Ingino, the Basilica di Sant'Ubaldo is one of the top attractions in Gubbio and a highlight of any walking tour of Gubbio. Its peaceful hilltop setting, sweeping views, and deep spiritual ties make it a memorable place to explore, especially for visitors drawn to sacred architecture and local traditions.

Inside this quiet sanctuary lies the bronze urn of Saint Ubaldo, a figure deeply beloved in Gubbio. The basilica marks the final destination of the famous Corsa dei Ceri on May 15th, one of the must-see places in Gubbio for experiencing authentic local culture tied directly to centuries of devotion.

History and Significance of Basilica di Sant’Ubaldo

Built atop earlier medieval structures, the basilica took its present form during the early 16th century when the adjoining convent and cloister were constructed. For the people of Gubbio, the site holds profound importance as the final resting place of Saint Ubaldo, a bishop remembered for his compassion, humility, and influence on the moral and civic life of the town.

While the exterior may appear modest, the interior reveals an expansive space composed of five naves and a semicircular apse, a design that enhances both acoustics and sacred atmosphere. Over the centuries, the basilica’s walls have been embellished with fresco cycles from the 16th to 18th centuries, many narrating episodes from the life of the saint. The adjoining cloister retains 16th-century frescoes attributed to Pier Angelo Basili, offering a gentle transition from monastic calm to the grandeur of the church.

The basilica’s symbolic significance is also tied to the lively tradition of the Corsa dei Ceri. Each year, three towering wooden “ceri” are carried in a spirited procession from the city centre up to the sanctuary, forging a powerful cultural link across generations.

Things to See and Do in Basilica di Sant’Ubaldo

Visitors first pass through the peaceful cloister, where frescoes provide a visual introduction to the world of Saint Ubaldo. Stepping inside the basilica, the five-nave layout introduces a sense of scale, with archways and decorated panels drawing the eye toward the apse. Soft natural light highlights the frescoes, creating an atmosphere conducive to reflection.

The bronze urn containing the relics of Saint Ubaldo is the spiritual focal point, attracting pilgrims who come to pay their respects. Beyond its religious importance, the basilica also offers exceptional views over Gubbio and the Umbrian countryside, especially at sunrise and sunset. Many visitors combine the basilica with a walk or funicular ride up Mount Ingino, making it one of the best places to visit in Gubbio for both scenery and history.

"Being somewhat isolated the basilica has the ambiance of a retreat or something, unusually with a pleasant courtyard fronting the basilica itself. Itwas all very peaceful until in true Italian style they display the corpse of Saint Ubaldo in a glass coffin. This time proudly on top of the altar. Not my cup of tea. If this might upset you then perhaps a visit to the nearby cafe is in order...."

"It’s a great (short) drive to get up here. Encourage you to if you have transport and near by the area. The church is quite small and not impressivefrom the inside but there are a few relics there worth noting, and there is a restaurant there which is recommended on a day that is not too windy. Enjoy some drone photos!..."
