Castle Garden, known locally as Burggarten, is a park on the western edge of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany, set on the grounds of the town's former castle. It is an open green space rather than a formal attraction, with lawns, flowerbeds, trees, paths, and terraces looking out over the Tauber Valley and the old town below.

The garden matters as much for its setting as for its remains: fragments of the old fortress, sculptural details, and clear viewpoints give it a different feel from the narrow streets inside the walls. Visitors tend to notice the contrast between the quiet paths and the busy town nearby. It suits people who want a short, easy stop for views, photos, or a calm break, and it also works for families and casual walkers who do not need a long visit.

History and Significance of the Castle Garden

The site where the Castle Garden now lies was once home to Rothenburg's Imperial Castle, built in the 12th century by the Hohenstaufen dynasty. The castle served as a symbol of imperial authority until a devastating earthquake in 1356 destroyed much of it. The ruins were never rebuilt, and the area was later transformed into a landscaped park during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Traces of the old fortress remain, including portions of the castle walls and a few stone foundations that hint at the site's medieval grandeur. The Burggarten also features statues representing eight German emperors, as well as sculptures by Tilman Riemenschneider, one of the region's most renowned artists. These artistic and historical elements blend seamlessly with the natural beauty of the surroundings, giving the garden a unique balance of culture and calm.

Things to See and Do in the Castle Garden

Strolling through the Castle Garden is a sensory delight. Visitors can wander along flower-lined paths and shaded walkways, stopping to admire the sculptures scattered throughout the park. In spring and summer, the gardens bloom in vibrant color, while autumn brings a rich palette of golds and reds. The remains of the old castle walls and towers add a historical backdrop to the peaceful greenery.

One of the garden’s main attractions is its panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Tauber Valley. From here, you can see Rothenburg’s defensive walls winding through the landscape and spot landmarks such as the Double Bridge (Doppelbrücke) below. It’s a perfect place for photography, picnics, or quiet reflection. Benches throughout the park invite you to linger, while informational plaques share insights about the site’s history and the sculptures on display.

How to Get There

The Castle Garden is located at the western edge of Rothenburg ob der Tauber's Old Town, just a short five-minute walk from Marktplatz along Herrngasse. The town is easily reached by car from the A7 motorway. If you are looking to rent a car in Germany I recommend having a look at Discover Cars, first, as they compare prices and review multiple car rental agencies for you. For those arriving by train, Rothenburg’s station connects with regional services through Steinach. Train schedules and bookings can be found on Omio. "Fantastic place with a nice view over Taubertal. The garden blossom was not so good during our July visit. I guess it will blossom more in May."

"We spent three days in Rottenburg am Neckar and one of the highlights of our visit was definitely the Castle Garden, or Burggarten as it’s knownlocally. We stumbled upon it while exploring the upper parts of the old town and it instantly became one of our favourite spots to just slow down and enjoy the moment. We took a relaxed stroll through the garden, taking in the fresh spring air while admiring the colourful flowers starting to bloom all around us. The garden is peaceful with a few benches scattered around, perfect for sitting quietly and soaking in the panoramic views over the valley and surrounding town rooftops. We loved listening to the birds – it felt like they were putting on their own little concert just for us. One thing that really stood out was the series of stone sculptures representing the four seasons – a quirky little detail that adds some character to the garden. There’s also a small historical touch with a memorial stone remembering the Jewish community that once lived here, which made us pause and reflect for a moment. The garden itself isn’t huge and there aren’t really any café facilities right there, so it’s best to grab your coffee or snack in town before heading up. We found that early mornings or late afternoons were the quietest times, especially if you prefer a more peaceful experience without too many people around. All in all, a visit to Rottenburg wouldn’t feel complete without spending some time in this lovely green space...."
