Silver Waterfall (Thác Bạc Waterfall) is Sapa's most famous roadside waterfall, a powerful 200-metre cascade that tumbles down the Hoàng Liên Sơn mountains just outside town. You'll find it on the main road toward O Quy Ho Pass, making it a simple detour that feels instantly rewarding: the spray, the sound, and the bright white rush of water against dark rock and green forest.

Because it's so easy to reach, it's one of the top attractions in Sapa for travelers who want a quick nature fix without committing to a long trek. Many people start with a walking tour of Sapa in the morning, then head out in the afternoon for waterfalls, viewpoints, and pass scenery when the light is softer and the air feels cooler.

Where is Thac Bac Waterfall? How to Get There?

Most international travelers route in via Nội Bài International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi, then continue onward to Sapa by road or rail-and-road connection. For the best deals and a seamless booking experience, check out these flights to Sapa on Booking.com.

From Hanoi, you can take an overnight train to Lào Cai, then transfer by shuttle or taxi up to Sapa Town, which is often the most comfortable option if you prefer to avoid long bus rides. Train schedules and bookings can be found on Omio.

Direct sleeper buses and limousine vans also run between Hanoi and Sapa, and once you're in Sapa Town it's a straightforward hop out to the waterfall on the main road toward O Quy Ho Pass, usually around 20-30 minutes depending on traffic and weather.

To reach the falls, the simplest option is to hire a taxi or take a motorbike/scooter along National Highway 4D toward Lai Châu; the waterfall is well signposted and sits right off the roadside.

Why is it called “Thac Bac”?

“Bac” means “silver” in English, hence the waterfall’s other name, “Silver Waterfall.” The water cascades with such force that it creates a brilliant white strip against the rocky cliff, resembling silver. When the water hits the small lake below, it splashes and forms stunning white foam. On sunny days, the entire waterfall dazzles, visible even from afar, making its name well-deserved.

Thac Bac Waterfall in Winter!

Situated near the foot of O Quy Ho Pass at an elevation of 1,800 meters, Thac Bac Waterfall is among the coldest places in Vietnam during winter. The temperature drop covers the upper part of the waterfall in fog and mist, turning the water icy cold. Thac Bac also sees the heaviest snowfall in Sapa, with past records showing snow up to 15 meters thick, creating a spectacular winter wonderland.

Thac Bac Waterfall’s Impressive Height

Standing at over 200 meters tall, Thac Bac Waterfall boasts a powerful and fierce flow. The sheer height requires visitors to crane their necks to see the top, offering a thrilling experience. To enhance accessibility, a system of stairs allows visitors to climb up and admire the waterfall from above.

"The waterfall emerges from a steep mountain gorge, with water perpetually descending into a rocky basin below. This constant flow generates aresonant acoustic effect, contributing to the area’s immersive natural ambiance. We totally enjoyed the easy walk up and down the guided steps with handrails for closer look at the waterfall. The whole area is clean and maintained. Minimal entrance fee for visitors. This waterfall about 12-15km from Sapa town. We took Grab and the waterfall is right by the mountain roads. Pools in this waterfall tended to be yellow, akin to rust. Not sure if this is due to the natural mineral content, or due to concreate and rebar being incorporated to stabilize the route of the river. Some pipes were also evident. Not sure, but it could be one of the sources of the water supply for the town. Tap water in the town tastes somewhat metallic...."

For Different Travelers

Families with Kids

Silver Waterfall is a good family stop because the payoff is immediate: you can see and hear the falls quickly without a long hike. Keep expectations simple, take the steps at an easy pace, and treat it as a scenic break between other sights rather than the whole day.

If you’re traveling with smaller kids, prioritize the safest viewpoints and avoid rushing up higher sections when the stone is wet. The experience is still excellent even if you don’t climb far.

Couples & Romantic Getaways

This is an easy add-on for couples doing a scenic drive day, especially if you like dramatic landscapes and quick photo stops. Pair it with a viewpoint on O Quy Ho Pass and a warm drink afterward, and it becomes a satisfying mini-route with a natural rhythm.

For a more romantic feel, aim for quieter times and linger just long enough to enjoy the sound and the mist without turning it into a box-ticking stop. The atmosphere is the point here.

Budget Travelers

The ticket is inexpensive, and you can get a lot of value from a short visit if you're already heading toward the pass. If you're watching costs, share a taxi with other travelers in Sapa or rent a scooter for the day to bundle multiple stops into one outing.

It’s also a good alternative to longer, paid activities when you want memorable scenery on a small budget. A well-planned half-day loop can feel full without spending much.

FAQs for Visiting Silver Waterfall (Thác Bạc Waterfall)

Getting There

It’s on National Highway 4D outside Sapa Town, on the road toward O Quy Ho Pass. It’s a classic roadside stop, so you’ll spot it easily once you’re on the main route out of town.
The simplest option is a taxi or motorbike ride along the main pass road, with the waterfall appearing as a clear, signposted stop. It’s close enough to do as a quick outing without planning your whole day around it.
Yes, there’s roadside parking close to the entrance, which makes it convenient if you’re already doing a pass-and-viewpoints day. Driving or riding is worth it if you want flexibility to combine several stops in one loop.

Tickets & Entry

You can get a great first look from the road, especially in strong flow. Going inside is worthwhile if you want closer viewpoints and the feel of the spray and sound up close.
No, it’s typically a walk-up visit where you buy entry on arrival. The only time it feels busy enough to matter is mid-day in peak season, when arriving a little earlier can make it calmer.

Visiting Experience

It pairs well with O Quy Ho Pass viewpoints and a second stop like Love Waterfall if you want a short forest walk. This combination gives you variety: roadside drama, wide panoramas, and a greener, quieter trail.
Light rain and mist can actually make the waterfall feel more dramatic, but visibility on the pass can drop. If conditions are stormy, keep it short and focus on the safest viewpoints rather than climbing higher.

Tours, Context & Itineraries

Yes, it’s commonly included because it’s fast to reach and works well as a scenic stop on routes toward the pass. If you’re choosing a tour, it’s worth checking what else is included so the day feels balanced.
Most travelers can do it independently because it’s straightforward and signposted. A guide is mainly useful if you want local context while linking it with villages, viewpoints, and other nearby stops.

Photography

Yes, especially when the flow is strong and the water looks bright against the darker rock. For better shots, look for angles that include the mountain backdrop rather than zooming only on the water.
A wider view from lower viewpoints often captures the full vertical drama of the cascade. If you climb a little, you can also frame the falls with surrounding greenery for a more layered image.

Accessibility & Facilities

You can still enjoy a good view from near the entrance and roadside areas, but the closer viewpoints involve steps. If mobility is a concern, aim for the easiest vantage points and keep the visit simple.
You’ll usually find small stalls and roadside stops in the immediate area. For a more comfortable break, plan your main café stop back in Sapa Town or at one of the larger viewpoint cafés along the pass road.
