Palacio Conde de Toreno is one of Oviedo's most eye-catching Baroque civil buildings, set right on Plaza Porlier in the historic center. Even if you only admire it from the outside, it's a rewarding stop for architecture lovers thanks to its distinctive, slightly asymmetrical façade and the sense of old Oviedo it preserves.

It fits perfectly into a compact walking tour of the Old Town: pair it with nearby squares, the Cathedral area, and the University zone, then loop back through the center for cider and tapas. The best places to see it are from Plaza Porlier itself (for the full façade) and from the surrounding streets where you can frame it with other historic buildings.

History and Significance of the Palacio Conde de Toreno

Built in the late 17th century, Palacio Conde de Toreno is a key example of Oviedo's Baroque civic architecture. Its design is often credited to architect Gregorio de la Roza, and the palace became closely tied to the city's political and cultural story through the centuries.

Beyond its noble origins, the building’s later life is part of what makes it significant: it has served educational and cultural roles, and today it is associated with the Real Instituto de Estudios Asturianos (RIDEA), an institution dedicated to Asturian studies and cultural research.

For travelers, that means the palace is not just a photogenic façade: it’s also a living piece of Oviedo’s intellectual heritage, sitting in one of the city’s most walkable, monument-dense pockets.

Things to See and Do in the Palacio Conde de Toreno

Start with the exterior: take time to study the stonework and the palace's Baroque composition from Plaza Porlier, where the building reads as part of a broader ensemble of historic Oviedo. It's especially atmospheric in the morning light or at dusk when the square quiets down.

If you’re able to go inside (access can depend on institutional activity), look for the classic palace layout elements often associated with this building type: an interior courtyard feel and the sense of layered spaces that once separated public reception areas from private life.

To add context without overplanning, consider joining a city walking tour that includes Plaza Porlier and the Cathedral quarter. Guides often connect the palace to Oviedo's broader Baroque-era urban story, which makes the stop feel less like “one more building” and more like a chapter in the city's timeline.

"We had our wedding in this beautiful place. It is such a shame it is run by incompetent and bad people. A week before our wedding we got told wecouldn’t have fireworks despite us asking IN WRITING if we could have them 8 months before and them saying yes! Also they wanted to charge us 300 euros more for our stay just because the woman we negotiated the price with didn’t work there anymore so they couldn’t honour the price she stated even though we had a contract with that price?! (In the end they did but on THE DAY OF THE WEDDING they where discussing this with me which is unacceptable)nAlso we hired the venue EXCLUSIVELEY for 3 days and the owners where there too having their summer family party which was also unacceptable. So many bad things to say but don’t have the time to write it all - what a shame as it’s such a beautiful place. BEWARE of them trying to charge you more a week before your wedding ( apparently it costs money to use their fairy lights that are already on outside ...it costs €150 to turn on)nOh and one more thing BEWARE of them asking you to pay in cash 3 days before your event. We refused to pay in cash but that’s how this venue works apparently they just don’t tell you until the last minute... Also the bathrooms need an update...."
