The Museum of Contemporary Art in Sicily (often referred to as MacS) is a compact contemporary-art museum tucked into Catania's historic center, just off the elegant Via Crociferi. The setting is part of the Badia Piccola of the Monastery of San Benedetto, so you get an appealing mix of baroque architecture and modern works in one stop.

It's an easy add-on to a walking tour of central Catania: pair it with Via Crociferi's churches, nearby piazzas, and a slow wander through the old town's lava-stone streets. If you're choosing the best places to see in a short visit, MacS works well as a quick, air-conditioned cultural break between bigger landmarks.

History and Significance of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sicily

MacS was created to bring contemporary art into direct conversation with one of Catania’s most atmospheric historic settings: the Badia Piccola connected to the Benedictine complex. That contrast is part of the point of the visit, where the building’s heritage frames work made with modern techniques and themes.

Since opening in the 2010s, the museum has positioned itself as a focused venue for figurative contemporary art, mixing Italian and international artists across painting, photography, and sculpture. The result is a small museum that can still feel “serious” in curatorial intent, especially if you like seeing how a collection reads inside a characterful, older structure.

Things to See and Do in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sicily

Expect a tight circuit of rooms rather than a sprawling museum: you’ll move through a selection of contemporary paintings, photographic works, and sculptural pieces that often lean toward the human figure, identity, and modern life. Because the museum is small, it’s a good place to slow down and look closely rather than rush.

One of the pleasures here is the variety of media and the international mix, which makes the collection feel broader than its footprint. Keep an eye out for how the artworks sit against the historic interior—this “old shell, new content” effect is part of what makes the visit memorable.

If you enjoy museum shops, leave a few minutes at the end for small souvenirs (postcards and similar items are commonly mentioned by visitors). It's also a good rainy-day option in Catania when outdoor sightseeing is less appealing.

How to Get to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sicily

The nearest airport is Catania–Fontanarossa Airport (CTA), which is the main gateway for flights into eastern Sicily. For the best deals and a seamless booking experience, check out these flights to Catania on Booking.com.

Catania Centrale is the city's main train station; from there you can reach the historic center by taxi, bus, or a straightforward walk if you're traveling light. Use Omnio to easily compare schedules, book train tickets, and find the best prices all in one place for a hassle-free journey across Italy.

If you’re driving, aim for parking outside the tightest parts of the old town and continue on foot, as central streets can be narrow and traffic-restricted. Is the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sicily Worth Visiting?

Yes—if you enjoy contemporary art and want a compact museum that fits neatly into a half-day in central Catania, MacS is worth it. It's small, but the collection is varied enough to feel rewarding, and the historic setting adds a layer you don't get in a white-box gallery.

Honest Pivot: if you only like blockbuster museums, need extensive interpretive text, or are sensitive to imperfect lighting and occasional awkward display angles, you may prefer to prioritize Catania’s larger headline sights and treat MacS as optional.

What Other Travellers Say...

Reviews Summary

Google reviewers rate the museum highly overall (4.4/5 from 354 reviews), often describing it as a small but rewarding stop with a surprisingly strong mix of paintings, photography, and sculpture. Common positives include the quality and variety of contemporary works, the ease of visiting without long lines, and small souvenirs available on-site. The most frequent drawbacks mentioned are the compact size (some finish in under an hour) and occasional display or lighting issues that can make viewing certain pieces less comfortable.

"Cozy small museum for an 5€ Student price. Collection ranges from oil paintings, photography to sculptures from year 2000 onwards. Very sad is theweird positioning of paintings on staircases which makes it inconvenient to look end enjoy, as well as bad lighting highlighting parts of the picture and makes others very hard to see. Also lights and shadows of other things intercept with artworks...."

For Different Travelers

MacS is a flexible stop: it can be a quick “one more thing” on a walking route, or a focused visit for art lovers who want a contemporary counterpoint to Catania's baroque streets.

Families with Kids

For families, the museum’s small size is a plus—you can do a full visit without testing everyone’s patience. The variety of media (photos, paintings, sculpture) helps keep attention moving.

That said, it’s not a hands-on children’s museum, so it works best with kids who enjoy visual discovery or a simple scavenger-hunt approach (colors, materials, faces, shapes).

Couples & Romantic Getaways

Couples will like this as a quieter cultural pause between more crowded landmarks. The contrast between the historic building and contemporary works can spark good conversation, especially if you enjoy interpreting art together.

Pair it with a slow stroll along Via Crociferi and a café stop afterward—this is the kind of visit that feels intimate rather than hectic.

Budget Travelers

Budget travelers can appreciate the value: it’s a short visit, but it’s curated and central, so you’re not spending extra on transport. It also fits well into a DIY walking day through the historic center.

To keep costs down, combine MacS with free exterior sightseeing nearby (church façades, streetscapes, piazzas) and plan one paid attraction per day.

History Buffs

Even if contemporary art isn’t your main draw, the museum’s location inside a historic religious complex adds context and atmosphere. The building itself is part of the story, and the neighborhood is one of Catania’s most historically resonant areas.

Treat MacS as a “history-meets-now” stop: see it as a way to experience how Catania layers centuries of architecture with modern cultural life.
