Museo Archeologico Paolo Giovio (Paolo Giovio Archaeological Museum)
Museum in Como

The Archaeological Museum has been housed for over a century in the Palazzo Paolo Giovio, once the in-town residence of the noble Giovio family. In 1894, collections of ancient and medieval artifacts were relocated to this historic building, which is situated in the pedestrian area within the city walls. The palace itself dates back to the late Middle Ages.
A significant renovation in the 16th century by Benedetto Giovio gave the palace its current Lombard Baroque appearance. In the 18th century, large windows were added to the facade, and a loggia was installed above the main entrance. Further modifications were made to the stairway, the garden, and the nymphaeum (a shrine).
The first floor features three halls with frescoes by different artists. The “Perrone Hall” is adorned with works by Giovan Battista Rodriguez, the “Barelli Hall” features frescoes by Giuseppe Coduri, and the “Hall of the Wedding” is decorated by Giovanni Battista Ronchelli. The Historical Museum was established within the building in 1932, followed by the Art Gallery in 1989.
The building is bordered on the northeast by Piazza Medaglie d’Oro (Gold Medals Square) and on the southeast by Palazzo Olginati. The two palaces are connected by an elevated walkway that spans Balestra Street, a public road since 1930.
The Archaeological Museum showcases the history of Como, spanning from Prehistory to the Middle Ages. The museum’s exhibits are continually updated to include new archaeological discoveries from the region. Additionally, visitors can explore a collectibles section featuring Egyptian, Greek, and Magna Graecia (ancient Greek cities in southern Italy) artifacts, bronze statuettes, and gems. The museum also houses an extensive library.
