Miniatur Wunderland
in Hamburg

Miniatur Wunderland is officially recognised as the largest model railway in the world, sprawling across nearly 1,700 m² with over 16 km of tracks, more than 1,200 digitally-controlled trains, 300 moving cars, and approximately 290,000 miniature figures representing day‑to‑day life around the globe. The exhibition unfolds across thematic regions—from Northern Germany and Scandinavia to Italy, America, and South America—each rich in architectural detail, natural scenery, and hidden surprises. Hilight attractions include the fully functional miniature Knuffingen Airport, where planes take off and land every minute, and a working monorail system that mirrors real-world traffic dynamics.
The experience is immersive and dynamic: every 15 minutes, the layout transitions from day to night, activating over 300,000 LED lights and ambient sound effects to bring the miniature world to life. Visitors can interact with the displays using around 200 push-buttons to trigger animations—start a mine train, start wind turbines, fire a penalty at the football stadium, or even launch the Space Shuttle. For deeper exploration, behind-the-scenes guided backstage tours reveal the workshops and technology behind the installation (additional fee applies) .
Miniatur Wunderland operates 365 days a year, generally from 09:30 to 18:00, with extended hours on weekends, holidays, and school breaks. Tickets cost €20 for adults, €12.50 for children under 16, with discounted fares for students, seniors, and disabled visitors. Booking online in advance is strongly recommended to skip long queues during peak times. Situated in Hamburg’s historic Speicherstadt warehouse district between Rathaus and the Elbphilharmonie, it’s easy to reach by foot, tram, or metro, making it a convenient and unforgettable stop in the city center.
