The Main Market Square, popularly known as the Rynek Główny, is the beating heart of Kraków and one of the most iconic landmarks in Poland. The Town Hall Tower, a surviving fragment of Kraków’s old Town Hall, also looks over the square, its slightly leaning silhouette adding character to the skyline. Today, Rynek Główny continues to fulfil its role as the gathering place of Kraków, buzzing with cafés, restaurants, shops, and street performers. It is here that festivals, parades, and seasonal markets take place, most famously the Christmas Market, which fills the square with stalls selling crafts, food, and mulled wine. Locals and tourists alike come here to sit at outdoor terraces, enjoy a drink with views of the basilica, or simply watch the lively rhythm of city life unfold. A visit to Rynek Główny is not without its tips. While the cafés and restaurants on the square itself offer wonderful views, they tend to be more expensive than those tucked away in the side streets. Venture just a short distance from the main square, and you’ll find underground bars and traditional cellars serving authentic Polish food and drinks at more affordable prices.
