The Hamburger Rathaus, or Hamburg City Hall, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, standing proudly in the Altstadt (Old Town) district. Completed in 1897, this neo-Renaissance masterpiece serves as the seat of both the Hamburg Parliament and Senate. The building was constructed following the Great Fire of 1842, which destroyed the original city hall, and it reflects the city’s ambition to present itself as a powerful and independent Hanseatic state. Its richly decorated façade features over 20 statues of emperors and kings, along with allegorical figures symbolising civic virtues such as justice and wisdom.

The Rathaus is immense in scale, boasting more than 600 rooms—more than even Buckingham Palace. It is built on over 4,000 oak piles and has a distinctive central tower that rises 112 metres above the ground. Inside, the main lobby is often open to the public, showcasing impressive chandeliers, mosaics, and marble columns. The ornate Grand Staircase, made from Sardinian marble and carved with scenes from Norse mythology, was intended to impress visitors and dignitaries alike. Official functions and ceremonial receptions are still regularly held in its grand Festsaal (Banquet Hall).

Visitors can take part in guided tours to explore the interior and learn about the building’s architectural details and political function. These tours often include visits to several lavish halls, each with their own character and historical references. The Bürgersaal (Citizens’ Hall) is particularly noteworthy as a symbol of Hamburg’s civic pride and democratic tradition. Temporary art exhibitions and cultural events are sometimes held here too, adding a contemporary layer to its historical core.

Outside, the Rathausmarkt—the square in front of the city hall—is a popular gathering place surrounded by historic buildings, cafés, and seasonal events such as the Christmas market. From here, it’s just a short walk to the Alster Lakes and Jungfernstieg shopping street. The Hamburger Rathaus is not only a functioning seat of government but also a symbol of Hamburg’s resilience, wealth, and independence—a must-see for anyone visiting the city.
