Hidden within the quiet streets of Korçë lies one of Albania's most unexpected treasures-the Bratko Oriental Art Museum. Opened in 2003, this unique institution showcases a stunning collection of Asian art and artifacts, the life's work of George Dimitri Boria, an Albanian-American photographer and collector. Boria's vision was to share the beauty and diversity of Eastern art with his homeland, and today his dream lives on in this extraordinary museum. The result is a cultural meeting point where Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, and other Asian traditions are celebrated in a distinctly Albanian setting.

Architecturally striking, the museum's avant-garde design features a blend of modern lines and subtle Eastern motifs, creating an atmosphere that feels both contemporary and timeless. Inside, visitors can explore a carefully curated array of objects that reflect centuries of artistic excellence. Whether you're drawn by the craftsmanship, the stories behind the pieces, or the serene environment, this spot is one of the best places to visit in Korçë. It's also often visited on walking tours of Korçë that explore the city's cultural and artistic landmarks.

History and Significance of Bratko Oriental Art Museum

The Bratko Oriental Art Museum was founded through the generosity and vision of George Dimitri Boria, an Albanian born in the United States who spent many years in Japan after World War II. Working as a photographer for the United Nations and General MacArthur, Boria developed a fascination with Asian culture and began collecting art that reflected the spirit, elegance, and philosophy of the region. His collection grew over the years to include hundreds of objects, and he eventually decided to donate them to Korçë, the birthplace of his parents.

In 2003, the museum opened its doors, fulfilling Boria’s wish to establish a lasting cultural connection between Albania and Asia. It remains the only museum of its kind in the country and one of the most distinctive in the Balkans. Beyond its artistic value, the museum embodies a message of unity and understanding-demonstrating how art can transcend borders, religions, and traditions to create shared appreciation and dialogue.

Things to See and Do in Bratko Oriental Art Museum

Inside the museum, over 400 artifacts are on display, spanning multiple cultures and artistic disciplines. Visitors will find elegant Japanese kimonos, intricately carved Chinese altars, Indonesian swords, embroidered belts, and ceremonial objects that reflect both beauty and purpose. Many of these items date back centuries and highlight the craftsmanship and symbolism central to Asian art.

Boria's personal photographs form another cornerstone of the collection, offering a visual record of post-war Asia and the human stories behind historical transformation. The museum also features European medals, a grand piano, and rare documents that shed light on Boria's own life and career. The layout encourages quiet reflection, with each exhibit thoughtfully arranged to evoke harmony and contemplation. "Such a special exerience; I highly recommend it. The museum is a collection of interesting pieces from all over Asia, each of them of greatimportance. The most eye-catching item was the photo of the collection's owner's mother, framed in gold jewellery. This museum is a tribute to his mother, being named after her. Borja left his hometown, Korça, when he was only 17, leaving behind his family to go to America. His mother died, not seeing him for a second time. Really touching. We'll visit agai..."

"I very much recommend coming to this museum, George Boria was an artist whose silhouette work is even shown at the Smithsonian! His personal historyand objects and work was also interesting, but the main focus is his art collections, a bit from Nigeria but mostly from Asia (hence the name of the museum.) The Japanese prints and objets d'art (also Chinese) are particularly special but there is also furniture from Korea, Indian statuettes, Tibetan art, etc. We were very glad that we went but the museum would benefit from better labeling and explanations...."
