History and Significance of the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi

Established in the 13th century, the basilica was one of the first brick churches in Kraków and quickly became a centre of Franciscan life in the region. Its design originally followed pure Gothic principles-pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and an emphasis on light and height to lift the visitor's gaze heavenward.

Over the centuries, fires, reconstructions, and aesthetic changes added Renaissance and Baroque elements to the structure. Despite these alterations, the church has preserved its medieval character, remaining one of Kraków’s most atmospheric religious spaces.

The basilica has long been associated with the city's Franciscan community, whose contributions to education, spirituality, and cultural life continue to shape Kraków today.

"I recently visited the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Kraków, and it left a deep impression on me. It’s one of the city’s oldest churches, founded in the 13th century by the Franciscans, and despite being right in the center of Kraków, it feels peaceful and welcoming. What stood out to me most were the Art Nouveau decorations by Stanisław Wyspiański. His stained-glass windows, especially God the Father – Let It Be, are absolutely stu ing. The light that passes through them changes the whole atmosphere of the church, and the floral wall patterns give the interior a unique and graceful look. In the main altar, there is a painting of St. Francis in Ecstasy, which beautifully represents the saint’s devotion and closeness to God. The image of Our Lady of Kraków (Matka Boża Bolesna) is kept in a side chapel, which I found especially moving. The chapel is beautifully designed and very peaceful, and it’s clear that many people come there to pray and seek comfort. The basilica is also the resting place of Blessed Salomea, a 13th-century Polish princess who became the first Polish woman to join the Franciscan Order, and Blessed Aniela Salawa, a Kraków-born lay Franciscan who lived in the early 20th century. Learning about their lives and seeing where they are buried added even more meaning to my visit. Overall, visiting the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi was a very positive experience. It’s a place full of history, faith, and beauty, and I left feeling both inspired and peaceful. Entrance to the entire church is free of charge, Sunday visiting hours may vary, there is no visiting during service...."
