Set right on Market Place in the centre of town, The Word is South Shields' modern library and community venue rolled into one bright, easy-to-love space. Opened in 2016, it was built to be more than shelves of books: think exhibitions, talks, seasonal arts and crafts sessions, storytelling events, and the kind of workshops that make you feel like you've stumbled into the town's creative living room.

It's one of the things to do in South Shields when you want something local, warm, and genuinely engaging, especially if the weather turns coastal. It also fits naturally into a walking tour of South Shields because you can pair it with the riverside, the market area, and nearby cultural stops without needing to plan a big “attraction day.”

History and Significance of The Word, National Centre for the Written Word

The Word was created as a flagship cultural project for South Tyneside, designed to pull together reading, learning, and community life in a single, welcoming building. Its launch in 2016 marked a deliberate shift in what a library can be: not just a quiet service you dip into, but a social space that hosts exhibitions, events, and practical creativity alongside traditional borrowing and study.

What gives it real significance is how it’s used. On any given week you’ll find a mix of people here for very different reasons-families dropping into activities, visitors browsing what’s on, students using the space to work, and locals treating it as a regular part of their routine. That everyday energy is exactly what makes it feel authentic rather than “set up” for tourism.

It also plays an outsized role in the town centre's atmosphere. Because it sits right in Market Place, it helps anchor South Shields as somewhere you can do more than shop or head to the beach-you can slow down, learn something, and feel connected to the place.

Things to See and Do in The Word, National Centre for the Written Word

Start by checking what's happening on the day, because The Word shines when you catch it in motion. Exhibitions come and go, and the programme often leans into hands-on activity-workshops, talks, family sessions, and themed events that make the building feel like a lively cultural venue rather than a quiet stop.

Even if you don’t arrive for a specific event, it’s worth wandering through with curiosity. Browse the library areas, look out for interactive or digital elements, and treat it as a place to reset your pace-especially useful if you’ve been walking the seafront or doing longer coastal loops. It’s also a strong choice for travelling families, because it tends to offer low-pressure activities that don’t require a full half-day commitment.

If you’re visiting solo, it’s an unexpectedly satisfying stop for an hour: pick up local context from exhibitions, enjoy a calm indoor space, and then step straight back into the market area with a better feel for the town’s everyday life.

"From the warm welcome, to the lovely and reasonably-priced cafe, and the shop with an amazing array of tasteful items, this venue is worth visitingany time, being open also on Sundays. Exhibitions are always well-curated. Staff are attentive and helpful. Re the recent FREE day-time disco; it was fab! Can we have another? However, (bearing in mind the age of attendees) I was dismayed to see that feedback we were invited to give on leaving, was via a QCode. I am not being ageist but many acquaintances don't have smart 'phone and/or the internet. Please consider an alternative means of feedback next time. Update 29.10.25 - yet another wonderful day-time free disco, where everything for us to enjoy ourselves is absolutely spot-on! A BIG THANK YOU and am already looking forward to the Christmas one...."
