Termessos is one of the best places to go on a day trip from Antalya, offering visitors a truly unforgettable experience where history, nature, and adventure meet. Perched more than 1,000 metres above sea level in the Taurus Mountains, this ancient Pisidian city remains one of the most striking archaeological sites in Turkey. Unlike other ancient cities near the coast, Termessos has retained its wild, untouched character, surrounded by pine forests, cliffs, and spectacular mountain views.

History and Significance

Termessos was founded by the Pisidians, an ancient Anatolian people known for their fierce independence. The city was strategically built high in the mountains, making it nearly impossible to conquer. Even Alexander the Great failed to capture Termessos during his campaign in 333 BC, famously referring to it as an “eagle's nest” due to its lofty position.

During the Hellenistic and Roman periods, Termessos flourished as a self-governing city, benefiting from trade and its natural defenses. The ruins visible today - theatres, temples, tombs, and an agora - reflect the city's wealth and architectural sophistication. The site's isolation has helped preserve its structures remarkably well, offering visitors a powerful sense of mystery and tranquillity.

Things to See and Do

The Theatre in the Sky

Termessos’ most famous landmark is its ancient theatre, dramatically carved into the mountainside. With seating for around 4,000 spectators, it offers one of the most awe-inspiring views of any theatre in the ancient world - the peaks of the Taurus Mountains stretching endlessly in the distance. Standing here, it’s easy to imagine ancient citizens gathering for performances amid this incredible natural backdrop.

The City Walls and Gates

As you hike through the site, remnants of the city’s defensive walls and gates are visible along the steep paths. The massive stonework showcases the skill of Termessos’s builders and provides a glimpse into how the city managed to remain unconquered for centuries.

The Agora and Temples

The agora served as the city’s central marketplace and social hub, surrounded by columns and administrative buildings. Nearby lie the remains of temples dedicated to Zeus, Artemis, and other gods worshipped by the Pisidians. The sense of solitude and peace among these ruins makes it one of the must-see places in Antalya for those seeking a deeper connection to the region’s ancient heritage.

The Necropolis and Tombs

Scattered across the hillsides are dozens of rock-cut tombs and sarcophagi, many with intricate carvings and inscriptions. The necropolis is a highlight for history enthusiasts, offering a fascinating look at the funerary traditions of the ancient Pisidians.

Hiking and Wildlife

Termessos is set within Güllük Mountain National Park, making it a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. The paths leading to the ruins are lined with wildflowers, pine trees, and occasional sightings of eagles soaring above - fitting for a city once compared to an eagle's nest. The combination of history and mountain scenery makes Termessos one of the top attractions in Antalya for outdoor adventurers.

How to Get There

Termessos is located about 30 kilometres northwest of Antalya, near the town of Korkuteli. The site is easily reached by car along the D350 highway, with clear signs marking the turnoff to Güllük Mountain National Park. From the park entrance, it's a 9-kilometre uphill drive to the parking area, followed by a 30-40 minute hike to the ruins. "My visit to Termessos Antik Kenti was an absolutely stu ing and worthwhile experience, but please be advised:nThe trails and paths within the ruinsare quite challenging and demanding.n• Trail Condition: Expect uneven, rocky, and sometimes slippery surfaces, with steep ascents and descents, especially leading up to the theatre and necropolis.n• Essential Gear: I strongly recommend wearing sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots with good grip to ensure safety and comfort.n• Pace yourself: Take your time, especially on the difficult sections. In summary: This site is breathtaking and definitely worth the effort, but proper footwear and preparation are crucial for an enjoyable and safe visit!..."

"The place is in ruins, you will be walking through a jungle forest with large stones and pieces of column all around you. Occasionally, you’ll see awall or an arch. There are a few exceptions to this, the most notable being the theater, which is in remarkably great shape given how the rest of the city fared, and the small temple of Artemis (not the one near the parking lot). The setting is amazing, once you get up to the higher levels, you can see that you’re sitting in a straddle of a few shorter peaks with great views down two large valleys. Bring hiking shoes, the town is about a Moderately steep hike up from the parking lot. It took me about 3 1/2 hours round-trip and I got to see most of what I wanted but not everything. I walked about 9000 steps and climbed 51 floors. So it’s not like many sites where you pull up to the parking lot walk a kilometer and see just about everything...."

"Amazing place. Like Indiana Jones discovery. Fully natural with no manmade artifacts. One of the best ruins I have seen anywhere in Europe. It's auphill ride from the entry gates which is about 5 km below. Then from the car park it's a 30 minutes walk up. Of this the first 10 minutes is tiring but after that it's all very exciting. A must visit...."
