Perched on the slopes of Mount Kruja, nearly 1,200 meters above sea level, Sari Salltik Cave is one of Albania's most spiritual and atmospheric sites. This remote mountain sanctuary, dedicated to the 13th-century dervish Sari Salltik, holds deep significance for the Bektashi Order - a Sufi branch of Islam known for its emphasis on tolerance and mysticism. The site combines legend, devotion, and stunning natural beauty, making it one of the must-see places in Kruja for both pilgrims and travelers in search of reflection and panoramic views.

Reaching the cave feels like a journey through both time and faith. The road winds high above Kruja, offering breathtaking vistas of the Adriatic coast and the plains below. At the summit, the air is cool and still, and the combination of sacred calm and sweeping scenery makes it a great place to visit on a walking tour of Kruja's surrounding mountains.

History and Significance of Sari Salltik Cave

The cave takes its name from Sari Salltik, a revered 13th-century Bektashi saint and missionary whose influence spread across the Balkans. According to legend, he traveled from Anatolia to Albania to spread Islam through peace, wisdom, and healing, eventually settling in the mountains above Kruja. The cave became both his hermitage and burial site, and over the centuries, it has evolved into one of the most important Bektashi pilgrimage destinations in the country.

The interior of the cave has been transformed into a modest shrine, containing a small tomb believed to hold the remains of Sari Salltik. Pilgrims light candles and offer prayers here, continuing a centuries-old tradition of devotion. The site also symbolizes Albania’s religious tolerance, attracting visitors of all faiths who come to admire its serenity and the unity it represents. The surrounding mountain landscape enhances its spiritual allure, with the clouds often drifting so close that the site seems suspended between earth and sky.

"This shrine sits near the summit of Mali i Krujës, about 30–45 minutes of uphill driving from Krujë. The site is dedicated to Sari Salltiku, a13th-century dervish and legendary figure who is said to have traveled through the Balkans and died around 1297–1298. The historic site itself is believed to date back to the early 14th century, making it roughly 700–750 years old. It was originally formed around a natural cave that served as a small hermitage and later became a Bektashi spiritual site. Throughout the centuries the shrine has gone through periods of damage and rebuilding, but the core cave-sanctuary remains the oldest element. From the viewpoint outside the cave you get spectacular panoramas over central and northern Albania: the Cape of Rodon, the Adriatic coastline near Durrës, the plains of Lezhë, and on clear days even the Ulqin coastline in Montenegro. The site sits at about 1,176 meters (3,858 ft) above sea level, giving it an almost aerial view over the region. A historically significant and peaceful spot, especially for anyone interested in Albania’s Bektashi heritage and medieval legends..."

"The second most visited pilgrimage site in Albania. After destructive communism, this pilgrimage site was restored. It is a Bektashi temple, Bektashiis a Sufi order. Very special in a cave situated at a great height with a fantastic view over Krujë and a large part of Albania. The road to it is in good condition. You can also walk there, but it seems like a tough trip...."
