Graz's Rathaus (Town Hall) is the grand, neo-Renaissance showpiece that anchors the north side of Hauptplatz, the city's main square. Even if you never step inside, the building is a must-see for its ornate façade, balconies, arches, and the way it frames the daily rhythm of the old town.

It's one of the easiest Graz landmarks to include on a walking tour: you'll naturally pass it while exploring Hauptplatz, Herrengasse, and the UNESCO-listed historic center. The best views are from the middle of the square (for the full façade) and from the corners of Hauptplatz where you can capture the Rathaus with the surrounding café life.

History and Significance of the Rathaus

Graz has had a town hall presence for centuries, but the Rathaus you see today is best known for its late-19th-century, neo-Renaissance look. The current building phase dates to around 1899–1900, giving it the richly decorated, “imperial-era” city-pride style that stands out so clearly against the open space of Hauptplatz.

Beyond architecture, the Rathaus is significant because it is still a working seat of city administration and civic life. That “living building” aspect is part of its appeal: it's not a museum set piece, but a landmark you experience in the middle of everyday Graz.

Its location also matters. Sitting directly on Hauptplatz, the Rathaus acts like a visual compass for visitors: once you've found it, you can easily orient yourself to the old town's main shopping streets, tram stops, and many of Graz's classic photo angles.

Things to See and Do in the Rathaus

Start outside. Spend time reading the façade like a story: columns, arched windows, decorative details, and the symmetry that makes the building feel both elegant and theatrical. If you’re into photography, the soft light in the morning and the glow toward late afternoon can make the pale exterior look especially striking.

If you can enter (access can depend on offices, events, and security), look for the atmosphere of a functioning civic building: staircases, corridors, and public-facing areas can feel surprisingly ceremonial for an administrative space. Travelers who attend a reception or public event here often mention that the interior is just as impressive as the exterior.

Pair the Rathaus with a “Hauptplatz loop”: linger in the square, watch the trams glide by, then continue to Herrengasse for shopping and architecture, or head toward the Mur river for a contrasting modern-city feel.

How to Get to the Rathaus

The nearest airports are Graz Airport (GRZ) for the quickest arrival, or Vienna International Airport (VIE) if you're connecting through a larger hub with more flight options. For the best deals and a seamless booking experience, check out these flights to Graz on Booking.com.

By train, aim for Graz Hauptbahnhof (Graz Hbf), then take a tram toward the city center and get off at Hauptplatz for the most straightforward approach. You can easily check timetables and book train tickets through the ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) website. However, for a smoother experience, we recommend using Omio, which simplifies the booking process and lets you compare routes, prices, and departure times all in one place.

If you’re driving, plan to park in a garage outside the tightest old-town core and walk or tram the last stretch, since central streets can be busy and parking is regulated. If you are looking to rent a car in Austria I recommend having a look at Discover Cars, first, as they compare prices and review multiple car rental agencies for you.

Is the Rathaus Worth Visiting?

Yes, the Rathaus is worth visiting as a Graz “anchor sight” even if you only see it from the outside. It's one of those landmarks that instantly tells you where you are, and it elevates Hauptplatz into a true postcard scene.

Honest Pivot: if you're short on time and you're not interested in architecture or city squares, you can skip a dedicated stop and simply let it be a backdrop as you pass through Hauptplatz on the way to Schlossberg, museums, or food spots.

What Other Travellers Say...

Reviews Summary

Reviews are overwhelmingly positive, with visitors consistently calling the Rathaus a standout architectural landmark and a centerpiece of Hauptplatz. Common highlights include the ornate neo-Renaissance façade, how impressive it looks both day and evening, and the lively atmosphere of the surrounding square that makes it easy to include on a walk through the old town. A smaller theme is that interior access can feel limited or dependent on events, so some travelers mainly experience it from the outside.

"Grazer Rathaus (Graz Town Hall) – The elegant centerpiece of Hauptplatz (May 9, 2025)nDominating the north side of Graz’s beautiful Hauptplatz, thismagnificent neo-Renaissance Town Hall (built 1899–1900) is impossible to miss. The light façade glows with ornate columns, arched windows, balconies, and statues, topped by a green-domed clock tower and fluttering Austrian and Styrian flags. On a cloudy May morning, the soft light made the details pop, and the bustling square in front—full of people, trams, and cafés—gave it incredible life. It’s not just a government building; it’s a symbol of Graz’s proud history and architectural beauty. A must-photograph landmark when exploring the city center!..."

"A Retrospective on Your Trip to Graz (10.11.25) Sometimes we ask ourselves where we are and what we’re doing in a conventionally general and lightlyexistential way. And sometimes you have these questions answered for you when you’re in Graz. For you it’s in her favorite bookstore, Moser, and you can test out your German, look at droopy dogs, and chat about Nothing. You can get too hungry and she’ll let you eat 1,5 of her Knödeln and something that’s maybe mozzarella, and another something that’s definitely a tomato. She’ll literally drag you out of when you try to pay. You’ll remember that, you can say. You’ll remember a lot about Graz if you come to visit. You’ll get to fly up and slide down the steps to Schlossberg and the Uhrturm that, like your watch, has a modified way of telling time. This is very fu y for some of us, because this is wrong. And in the Murinsel you can sit on the same side of a table in the middle of the Mur river, and eat a Biscoff you were convinced could only be Italian and reflect on yourself thousandfold in the bathrooms. The sky is a still light gray at this point. You’ll have to trace your own constellations, but the views are still unforgettable. And you can race, and win, on they way up to a part of Il castello di Graz and lose to her on the way back down. You’ll bumble into a tour group on the way out and barely keep your laughter contained as you stumble away, your hands already woven back together. And of course The University of Graz is a must see, where you can see something like her life before the world opens up again and you’re back on Graz’s very efficient bus system closing your eyes and leaning in at the right moment as the windows spin through opaque film of something that might have been the world. You’ll buy your tickets months before, the same day you know you want to visit Graz. And you think she knew that some part of you was already there, waiting for the rest of you to figure out what they both already knew...."

For Different Travelers

The Rathaus works best as a flexible stop: a quick photo for some, a slow architectural look for others, and a natural meeting point for anyone exploring Graz on foot. Because it's on Hauptplatz, it's easy to combine with shopping streets, cafés, and tram connections without extra planning.

Families with Kids

Kids often enjoy the “big building on the big square” factor, especially with the movement of trams and the lively street scene around Hauptplatz. It's also an easy win for parents because you can keep the visit short and still feel like you've seen something iconic.

Turn it into a mini scavenger hunt: spot balconies, arches, and decorative details on the façade, then reward everyone with a snack break nearby. Since the square is central, you’ll be close to plenty of options for quick, kid-friendly stops.

Couples & Romantic Getaways

For couples, the Rathaus is a great starting point for a romantic old-town wander: begin at Hauptplatz, drift into the smaller lanes, and finish with a café or wine bar nearby. The building photographs beautifully, which makes it ideal for a “we were here” moment without needing a formal photo shoot.

Visit in the softer light of late afternoon, when the square feels more cinematic. From here, it’s easy to continue to viewpoints and evening plans without backtracking.

Budget Travelers

The Rathaus is a budget-friendly highlight because the best part is free: the exterior and the atmosphere of Hauptplatz. You can build an entire low-cost Graz day around it by walking the old town, window-shopping, and choosing one affordable meal stop.

Use it as your navigation hub: meet friends here, plan routes from here, and keep transit costs down by walking between nearby sights. Even a short stop gives you a strong sense of Graz’s character.

History Buffs

History-minded travelers will appreciate how the Rathaus reflects a specific moment of civic confidence and urban identity at the turn of the 20th century. The neo-Renaissance styling is part of that story, signaling tradition and prestige in architectural form.

Pair the Rathaus with a deeper old-town circuit: look for layers of history in the surrounding streets, then connect the civic center to other landmarks that show Graz's evolution across centuries.

Yes, it’s in the heart of the historic center and naturally fits into most walking routes. If you’re exploring Herrengasse, you’re already basically there.
You can get close, but the immediate area is a busy central zone with traffic rules and pedestrian activity. It’s often faster to be dropped nearby and walk the last minute.

Tickets & Entry

The Rathaus is primarily a working civic building rather than a dedicated museum. If you want exhibitions, plan a separate stop at one of Graz’s museums nearby.

Tours, Context & Itineraries

Photography

On the square, a small tripod is usually fine if you’re not blocking foot traffic. Inside any building areas, rules can vary.
Morning tends to be clearer and less crowded, while late afternoon can add warmth to the façade. Overcast days can also be great for detail shots.

Accessibility & Facilities

Hauptplatz is generally flat and easy to navigate. Crowds and tram tracks can require extra attention, especially at peak times.
