National Picture Gallery, Ferrara
Gallery and Historic Building in Ferrara
The Picture Gallery in Ferrara was established in 1836 as the first public collection of Ferrarese paintings. Its primary purpose was to prevent the dispersal of the local artistic heritage by creating a modern museum dedicated to preserving and promoting Ferrara’s art and culture.
In 1958, the Picture Gallery transitioned to national ownership, and in the subsequent years, it received numerous donations and collections. As a result, the museum now boasts a collection of over two hundred artworks, encompassing both religious and secular themes. These artworks provide visitors with a comprehensive overview of Ferrarese painting from the 13th to the 17th centuries.
The artworks are displayed in various rooms on the piano nobile (main floor) of the gallery, including the Hall of Honour, which features beautiful 16th-century ceilings as part of its decorative elements. The Picture Gallery in Ferrara is a significant cultural institution that allows visitors to explore the rich artistic heritage of the region across different historical periods.
