Ma Pi Leng Pass

The Mã Pí Lèng Pass is one of the must-see places in Hà Giang and often visited on walking tours of Hà Giang's mountain villages, though it is best experienced by motorbike or car. Known as the “King of Vietnamese Mountain Passes,” this dramatic stretch between Đồng Văn and Mèo Vạc showcases Vietnam at its wildest, where jagged peaks, deep canyons, and winding roads converge into a landscape that feels almost mythical.

Part of National Road 4C - the historic “Happiness Road” - the pass today stands as a testament to human determination, carved into nearly vertical mountainsides by thousands of workers in the 1960s.

History and Significance of Mã Pí Lèng Pass

The Mã Pí Lèng Pass rises to about 1,500 meters above sea level in the far north of Vietnam, near the border with China. Its name is often interpreted as “the bridge of a horse's nose,” evoking the steepness of the terrain and the difficulty of crossing the mountains before the modern road was constructed.

The road itself - National Road 4C - was built between 1959 and 1965. Thousands of young volunteers and local ethnic minorities carved the “Happiness Road” into the mountains by hand, often at great personal risk. The most challenging section, the Mã Pí Lèng cliff, took years to complete, with workers suspended by ropes as they chipped away at the rock.

Today, the pass is not only an engineering marvel but also a symbol of the resilience and unity of Vietnam’s northern communities. It forms part of the UNESCO-recognised Đồng Văn Karst Plateau Geopark, an extraordinary landscape shaped over hundreds of millions of years.

Things to See and Do in Mã Pí Lèng Pass

The pass offers some of the most extraordinary views in Southeast Asia. Dramatic limestone peaks rise sharply around the road, while the turquoise Nho Quế River cuts deep into the canyon below. This combination makes it one of the best places to visit in Hà Giang for panoramic photography and mountain scenery.

At designated viewpoints, travellers can stop to take in the spectacular Mã Pí Lèng Canyon - one of the deepest in Vietnam. The river below can be explored by boat, offering a contrasting, serene perspective of the towering cliffs.

Motorcycling the pass is a dream for adventure seekers, with hairpin bends, cliffside curves, and sweeping views at every turn. Visitors can also hike short sections for a slower, more immersive experience with the landscape.

Along the route, small ethnic minority villages add cultural richness to the journey, with opportunities to meet Hmong, Tay, or Dao communities and learn about life in this rugged highland region.

Reviews Summary

Mã Pí Lèng Pass sits at about 1,500 m in Hà Giang province and offers dramatic, rugged mountain scenery and high, heart‑racing roads above the deep Nho Que River canyon; visitors praise jaw‑dropping panoramic views, a crystal‑blue river far below, friendly local people, and recommend experiencing it as part of the Ha Giang Loop, with the skywalk and famous rock reached on foot (paths can be narrow, hot and challenging, so take care).

"Definitely worth to go to the Skywalk - it’s easier (and safer) on foot than by bike. Not too many people attempt it by bike given any wrong movewith make you tumble about 1,500 meters down. To get to the infamous rock (or the top) you have to climb. It’s extremely hot there and not easily accessible. Especially when there are many tourists, paths are even narrower and a wrong move will result in certain death...."
