Jardins de l'Europe is Annecy's classic lakeside park: a leafy, shaded stretch of paths and lawns tucked between the Hôtel de Ville and the edge of Lake Annecy. It's the kind of place you naturally drift into while exploring the Old Town, then end up staying longer than planned because the views across the water to the mountains are so good.

If you're doing a walking tour of Annecy, this is one of the easiest “best-of” stops to weave in: stroll from the canals of Vieille Ville to the lakefront, cross toward Pont des Amours, and loop back along the waterfront for postcard angles of the lake, boats, and peaks.

History and Significance of the Jardins de l’Europe

The land where Jardins de l'Europe sits today wasn't always a manicured park. Historically, this area was shaped by water: marshy ground and small islets near the lake and canals, used for different purposes over the centuries as Annecy expanded beyond its medieval core.

Over time, the site passed through religious ownership and later into municipal hands, eventually becoming a public garden designed for strolling and relaxation. The park’s “English landscape” feel, with broad lawns and mature trees, reflects the 19th-century taste for airy, scenic public spaces.

Today, its significance is as much about setting as it is about landscaping: it's the green hinge between the Old Town and the lake, and one of the most recognizable places to slow down in central Annecy.

Things to See and Do in the Jardins de l’Europe

Start with the simple pleasure: walk the shaded paths under tall trees, then keep drifting toward the lake's edge for wide-open views of Lake Annecy framed by mountains. It's an ideal spot for a low-effort reset between sightseeing bursts in the Old Town.

If you like people-watching, this is one of Annecy’s best stages: runners, families, picnickers, and photographers all share the space, especially on sunny days. There are also small features that make it feel “lived-in,” like sculptures, fountains, and little corners that invite a quiet sit.

For a classic mini-itinerary, pair the park with Pont des Amours and the adjacent waterfront promenades. It's also a convenient place to begin or end a short lake cruise if you're planning time on the water.

Where to Stay Close to the Jardins de l’Europe

Base yourself in central Annecy (Old Town/lakefront) so you can walk everywhere and enjoy the park at quieter times like early morning and evening.

Hôtel du Palais de l’Isle A characterful Old Town stay right in the postcard zone, ideal if you want canals, cobbled streets, and an easy walk to the gardens.

Hôtel des Alpes A practical, well-located option near the train station that still keeps you within an easy stroll of the lake and Jardins de l'Europe.

Hôtel Le Pré Carré A comfortable, modern pick close to shopping streets and the lakefront, great for travelers who want convenience without sacrificing walkability.

Hôtel Impérial Palace A classic lakeside splurge with a resort-like feel; choose it for views, a more “holiday” atmosphere, and a scenic walk back toward the gardens.

Auberge du Lyonnais A cozy, central choice that’s especially good for food-focused travelers, with quick access to both the Old Town dining scene and the park.

Is the Jardins de l’Europe Worth Visiting?

Yes, it's worth visiting, especially if you're already exploring Annecy's Old Town. The park is less about rare attractions and more about the unbeatable combination of shade, lakefront scenery, and an easy, beautiful walking route that feels quintessentially Annecy.

Honest Pivot: if you’re short on time and prefer “must-see interiors” (museums, castles, churches), you might treat this as a pass-through rather than a dedicated stop. In peak summer crowds, it can feel busy and less serene, so consider visiting early or later in the day.

What Other Travellers Say...

Reviews Summary

Travelers rate Jardins de l'Europe very highly overall, praising the standout views of Lake Annecy framed by mountains and the park's well-kept, relaxing atmosphere. Many mention it as an ideal stroll between the Old Town and the waterfront, with shady areas, open lawns, and family-friendly features like play spaces. A recurring downside is heavy crowding during peak tourist season, and a few visitors note the park itself feels simple if you're expecting a major “attraction” beyond the scenery.

"The park itself has nothing special, but the view of the lake surrounded by mountains is truly beautiful. One point worth mentioning is that there isa pier here from which boats depart for short cruises on the lake. Unfortunately, during the tourist season, it becomes incredibly crowded. Not only is it impossible to find a bench to sit on, but you can't even find a spot to lie down on the grass... so it might be a good idea to visit it outside the tourist season..."
