Gdańsk Town Hall

The Gdańsk Town Hall (Ratusz Głównego Miasta) is one of the city’s most striking landmarks, located on Long Market and serving as a symbol of Gdańsk’s former independence and prosperity. Construction began in the 14th century in the Gothic style, but the building was significantly expanded in the 16th century with Renaissance features, particularly under the direction of Dutch architect Anthonis van Obbergen. The tall, elegant tower, topped with a gilded statue of King Sigismund II Augustus, reflects both civic pride and the influence of northern European architecture. For centuries, it served as the seat of the city’s government and a gathering place for civic ceremonies and celebrations.

Inside, the Town Hall houses richly decorated interiors that highlight Gdańsk’s Hanseatic wealth and cultural refinement. The most impressive room is the Great Council Hall, also known as the Red Hall, which features a coffered ceiling adorned with allegorical paintings, gilded woodwork, and portraits of Polish kings. Other chambers display period furnishings, historic artworks, and artefacts that tell the story of the city’s political and social life across the centuries. The building suffered extensive damage during World War II but was painstakingly restored in the postwar years to reflect its original grandeur.

Today, the Town Hall functions as the main branch of the Gdańsk History Museum and is open to visitors. One of the highlights is climbing the tower for panoramic views of the city’s rooftops and the Motława River—a rewarding experience, especially in clear weather. Whether admired from the square or explored inside, Gdańsk Town Hall offers a vivid window into the city’s golden age and its enduring spirit.
