Tucked into Bregenz's Oberstadt (Upper Town), the Fountain of the Minnesinger of Montfort is a small, characterful fountain featuring a bronze figure of Count Hugo of Montfort, shown in a half-kneeling pose as a medieval poet-musician. It's the kind of sight you'll likely encounter naturally while wandering the historic lanes above the lake, and it adds a surprisingly romantic, old-world note to the neighborhood.

This is an easy stop on a self-guided walking tour of Bregenz's Old Town: pause for a photo, listen to the water, and then continue on to nearby viewpoints and landmarks in the Oberstadt. It's best appreciated as part of a slow stroll rather than a standalone destination.

History and Significance of the Fountain of the Minnesinger of Montfort

The fountain pays tribute to Hugo of Montfort, a nobleman associated with the Montfort-Bregenz line and remembered as a late medieval Minnesänger (courtly lyric poet). In Bregenz, his name is part of the city's cultural memory, linking the Upper Town's historic setting with a figure from the region's aristocratic and literary past.

What makes the monument feel meaningful is its placement: rather than being a grand, isolated memorial, it sits naturally within the Oberstadt’s walkable fabric. The result is a small but evocative reminder that Bregenz’s history isn’t only about lake trade and fortifications, but also about patronage, art, and storytelling.

Even if you’re not deep into medieval literature, the sculpture communicates its theme clearly: music, verse, and a touch of chivalric imagery. It’s a quick cultural “bookmark” during a broader Old Town walk.

Things to See and Do in the Fountain of the Minnesinger of Montfort

Start with the bronze figure itself: look closely at the pose and instrument motif, then step back to take in how the fountain sits within its greenery. The combination of shade, gentle water sound, and the Upper Town’s calm streets makes this a pleasant micro-break, especially on warm days.

Use this stop as a pacing point in your Oberstadt route. From here, it’s easy to continue to other historic corners, small squares, and scenic overlooks that make the Upper Town worth the uphill walk.

If you enjoy photography, this is a good place for detail shots (bronze texture, water, stonework) as well as wider frames that include the surrounding lanes. It's also a nice spot to pause briefly during a guided or self-guided walking tour and add a bit of context to the Montfort name you'll see elsewhere in the region.

"The Mi esinger Fountain by Montfort in Bregenz – a subtly placed touch of chivalric romance in the heart of the upper town. Count Hugo has kneltthere for decades, cast in bronze, as if medieval poetry has never gone out of style. Surrounded by shady greenery and gentle splashing, he seems to still be waiting for applause – or at least an appreciative nod from strolling passersby. A fountain that sings softly without uttering a word. Did you like this review? Then please give it a thumbs up!..."

"It is a beautiful fountain, situated in a lovely setting on the hill above Bregenz's upper town. The bronze statue depicts Count Hugo XII ofMontfort, half-kneeling and playing the harp. As a respected politician, he held various administrative offices and was also the author of lyrical and didactic poems. A rather unusual combination of politics and courtly love songs. His fame, however, was based on his political skills. The aesthetically pleasing sculpture, compared to a fresco of his portrait, is a close representation of him, portraying him in a sympathetic ma er. The sculpture stands in a polygonal fountain on a column, providing a fitting setting...."
