Rathausmarkt is one of the top attractions in Hamburg, serving as the city's political, social, and cultural centre for more than a century. With its elegant façades, arcades, and vibrant public life, it is a highlight of any walking tour of Hamburg, offering a perfect introduction to the city's heritage and atmosphere.

History and Significance of Rathausmarkt

Rathausmarkt was created in the late 19th century following the completion of the Hamburger Rathaus, designed to showcase Hamburg's civic pride and Hanseatic independence. As the forecourt of the city hall, the square quickly became a natural gathering place for public life, political expression, and festivities.

Over the decades, the square has hosted major historical events, from political demonstrations to civic celebrations. Its open design, framed by arcaded buildings and historic façades, reflects Hamburg’s long-standing identity as a prosperous trading city marked by openness and resilience.

"The Christmas Market is in a beautiful setting in an an otherwise visually unappealing rest of the city. It was quite busy which was to be expected.A lot of vendors, great food and drinks. A feast for the eyes with the surrounding buildings and canals. Parking is best found in a nearby parking garage for around 3.5 Euro per hour...."

"I visited the Hamburg Christmas Market because I heard it was the most beautiful of all the Christmas markets in Germany. It's quite large, and it'seven better because it's located right in front of the city hall. You can even meet Santa at 6 p.m. sharp. There are even musicians playing instruments, and you can really feel the Christmas atmosphere...."
