Château des Tourelles
Castle in Giverny

The Château des Tourelles is a historic castle located in Vernon, France, in the Eure department of Normandy. Built in 1196 by King Philippe Auguste, the fortress was part of his military strategy against Richard the Lionheart, who controlled nearby territories. The château consists of a square tower surrounded by four round turrets, rising to a height of 20 meters. Remarkably, it has remained largely unchanged for over 800 years, making it one of the best-preserved medieval castles in France. Since 1955, it has been owned by the commune of Vernon and was classified as a Monument Historique in 1945.
The Château des Tourelles played a crucial role in medieval conflicts, serving as a defensive stronghold along the Seine River. Its strategic location allowed French forces to control access to Normandy, particularly during the Hundred Years’ War. Over the centuries, the castle witnessed numerous battles and sieges, yet its structure remained intact. Today, visitors can admire its thick stone walls, narrow arrow slits, and imposing towers, which reflect the military architecture of the 12th century. The château stands as a testament to the turbulent history between France and England during the Middle Ages.
Beyond its military significance, the Château des Tourelles is a cultural landmark in Vernon. The town itself is known for its picturesque streets, half-timbered houses, and proximity to Giverny, the home of Claude Monet. The château is often included in historical walking tours, allowing visitors to explore its exterior and learn about its past. While the interior is not open to the public, the surrounding area offers stunning views of the Seine River, making it a popular spot for photography and sightseeing.
The Château des Tourelles remains an enduring symbol of medieval France, attracting history enthusiasts and travelers alike. Its timeless architecture, strategic importance, and historical legacy make it a fascinating destination for those interested in Norman history. Whether visiting Vernon for its artistic heritage or its medieval landmarks, the château provides a glimpse into the past, standing proudly as a reminder of France’s medieval fortifications.
