The Castle of Vêves, perched majestically on a rocky spur above the village of Celles, traces its roots back to early medieval times. Legend holds that the site hosted a fortress as early as the era of Pépin of Herstal (7th century), though the current structure primarily dates from around 1230 and was substantially rebuilt in the 15th century by the Beaufort family. Its irregular pentagonal shape, flanked by six round towers, reflects the design of a noble fortress blended with gothic elegance.

The castle’s architecture is both fascinating and picturesque. Inside the courtyard, you’ll find a two-level half-timbered gallery dating from the 16th century alongside a southern façade adorned with red-brick embellishments reflecting the Louis XV style. The great keep, soaring over 36 m high with walls up to 3 m thick, reinforces its defensive medieval origins. This combination of military strength and Renaissance charm gives Vêves its striking, fairytale appearance.

Today, the castle remains in the direct lineage of the original Beaufort–Liedekerke Beaufort family and is lovingly maintained by a foundation created in the late 20th century to preserve this cultural treasure. A major restoration occurred between 1969–1979, reviving interiors with 18th-century furniture, china, woodwork, alcoves, and wall windows, giving visitors a glimpse into the luxurious life of its aristocratic inhabitants.

Visitors can explore its grand rooms, chapel, galleries, and scenic terraces, either independently or via a guided tour available in multiple languages. Families particularly enjoy interactive experiences like treasure hunts, medieval dress-ups, and knightly ceremonies. Additionally, Vêves serves as an excellent starting point for scenic hikes through the Upper Meuse Valley, such as trails linking to the nearby Castle Walzin. With its blend of historical depth, architectural beauty, and immersive visitor activities, the Castle of Vêves is a captivating highlight of Wallonia’s heritage.
