The Vieux Phare de Honfleur, also known as the Old Lighthouse of Honfleur, is a historical maritime landmark located on the southern bank of the Seine estuary in Honfleur, Normandy. Constructed in 1853, this lighthouse was originally built to complement the nearby Phare de Fatouville and guide ships safely into the port of Honfleur. It replaced an earlier wooden structure known as the “Tour à feu,” which had served as a beacon for sailors. The lighthouse was first lit in 1857 and remained operational until 1908, when its lantern was removed and repurposed for the newer Phare du Butin.

The Vieux Phare is a striking example of 19th-century lighthouse architecture, featuring a square tower made of white masonry with visible stonework and granite detailing. Its design includes a cornice and chainage of granite from Cherbourg, adding to its robust and elegant appearance. Although the lighthouse is no longer active, its historical significance and architectural beauty make it a cherished part of Honfleur’s maritime heritage. The structure has been preserved and is now owned by the city of Honfleur.

Visitors to the Vieux Phare can admire its exterior and learn about its role in the town’s maritime history. While the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, its location near the Seine estuary offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
