Twycross Zoo is one of the top attractions in Atherstone, especially for travellers who love wildlife and conservation-focused experiences. Founded in 1963 by Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans, this 80-acre zoo has grown into a major centre for primate care, research, and education, welcoming more than half a million visitors each year. Its peaceful countryside setting makes it a refreshing day out for families, photographers, and animal enthusiasts alike.

Known as the UK's specialist primate centre, Twycross Zoo is the only zoo in the country to house all four great apes: chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos, and orangutans. With thoughtfully designed habitats, immersive exhibits, and a strong focus on welfare, it's a great place to visit on a walking tour of Atherstone or as a destination in its own right.

History and Significance of Twycross Zoo

Twycross Zoo began in 1963 as the passion project of two pioneering women, Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans. Their mission was to create a sanctuary for primates and to promote animal welfare and education. Over time, their small collection expanded into one of the most respected zoological institutions in the UK.

The founders became internationally recognised for their work with primates, and the zoo is still celebrated for this legacy today. Twycross supports more than 55 conservation projects worldwide, with particular involvement in endangered species such as the Cao Vit gibbon and the red-fronted macaw. It also manages a nature reserve on its grounds that helps protect native wetland species.

The zoo’s continued commitment to conservation, research, and public education has secured its status as a leader in modern zoological practice.

Things to See and Do in Twycross Zoo

A highlight of any visit is Chimpanzee Eden, a multi-storey habitat designed to replicate a jungle canopy. Here, visitors can observe the complex social behaviour of chimpanzees in a spacious, enriching environment.

The Gibbon Forest is another standout, where visitors watch agile gibbons swing effortlessly through a network of ropes and treetops. For something more tranquil, the Butterfly Forest offers a tropical walk-through experience filled with free-flying butterflies.

Across its 80 acres, the zoo is home to more than 150 species, including Sumatran tigers, snow leopards, Amur leopards, and many endangered primates. Well-planned paths guide visitors through themed zones, allowing a relaxed full-day experience filled with wildlife encounters and interactive exhibitions.

"We went to the lantern light display and I must admit we were really impressed with it. It meanders its way through the zoo and is a good walk - it’snot a short 30-40 minute walk especially if you stop and stare at the displays. Kids will love it. I didn’t take many photos at all - there is so much to see. The light display is fantastic but food and drink not so much; take your own food at least, including chocolate biscuits - if you’re doing the toasted marshmallows you can make your own s’mores..."

"We visited Twycross Zoo’s Lanterns of the Wild with myself, my partner, and our two young children (aged 2 years and 9 months), and we had a trulywonderful time. Seeing Santa in the grotto was a real highlight — he was absolutely brilliant with the babies, making the experience feel so special. Santa’s elves were fantastic too, especially Jingle and Jangle, who put on an amazing show and kept everyone entertained. The lanterns themselves were truly phenomenal and created such a magical atmosphere throughout the zoo. A lovely, festive experience for the whole family and one we’d highly recommend...."
