Tobermory Lighthouse is on the Isle of Mull, just north of Tobermory, and is a coastal attraction reached by foot rather than by road. The walk follows a wooded path out from the village to Rubha nan Gall, where the lighthouse stands above the Sound of Mull. Built for sea traffic passing through this channel, it is part working landmark and part scenic shoreline stop, with the route itself forming much of the visit.

Visitors come here for the walk as much as the lighthouse. The path gives changing views of Tobermory Harbour, the rocky coast, and the water across to the mainland, with a quiet finish at the point itself. It works best for people happy with a moderate walk, photographers, and anyone looking for a simple outdoor stop near Tobermory. Those wanting level paths, indoor access, or facilities on site should plan elsewhere.

History and Significance of Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse

The lighthouse was built in 1857 by David and Thomas Stevenson, members of the renowned engineering family responsible for many of Scotland’s coastal beacons. Its purpose was to guide vessels safely through the northern entrance of the Sound of Mull, a channel frequently used by fishing boats, cargo ships, and naval vessels.

Rubha nan Gall was automated in 1960, meaning keepers were no longer needed on site. After being sold in 2013, the keeper’s cottages were carefully restored-one becoming a private home and the other a remote self-catering retreat. With no mains water or electricity, they operate entirely off-grid, adding to the rugged charm and solitude of the location.

Things to See and Do in Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse

The highlight is the walk itself: a 1.3-mile (2.1-kilometre) trail from Tobermory following the wooded coastline. As you walk, look for views back toward Tobermory Harbour, whose rainbow-coloured buildings are especially striking from a distance. The Sound of Mull opens up ahead, often dotted with fishing boats, yachts, or passing ferries.

At the lighthouse, visitors can explore the point, admire the tower from various angles, and enjoy views across to the mainland. Wildlife is plentiful-seals often rest on nearby rocks, and sea eagles sometimes glide overhead. The peaceful setting makes it a great place to sit, breathe, and enjoy the coastal environment.
