Ojców Castle
Castle in Kraków

Ojców Castle is a captivating medieval ruin nestled in the heart of Ojców National Park, just 25 kilometers north of Kraków, Poland. Built in the 14th century by King Casimir III the Great, it was part of a strategic network of fortresses known as the Eagles’ Nests, designed to defend the southern borders of the Kingdom of Poland. The castle’s name—“Ojców,” meaning “Father’s”—was chosen by Casimir to honor his father, Władysław I Łokietek, who had once sought refuge in the nearby caves.
Perched dramatically on a limestone cliff, the castle once boasted a drawbridge, a deep moat, and a crew of 100 soldiers guarding the route to Kraków. Over the centuries, it changed hands many times and suffered damage during various conflicts, including being partially burned by the Swedes in 16551. The Koryciński family later renovated it, adding residential quarters and fortifications, marking its golden age in the 17th century.
Today, Ojców Castle stands as a romantic ruin, with remnants of its defensive walls, entrance gate, and a restored tower that houses a small museum exhibit titled “The History of the Father’s Castle”. Visitors can explore the site and enjoy sweeping views of the Prądnik Valley, thanks to a specially built observation terrace. The castle’s rugged charm and dramatic setting make it a favorite stop along the Eagles’ Nests Trail.
Legends swirl around the castle, adding to its mystique. One tale speaks of Skarbimir, a noble who imprisoned his niece’s fiancé in the castle’s dungeon, only to be stripped of his title by King Bolesław Krzywousty when the truth came out. These stories, along with the castle’s storied past, contribute to its allure as both a historical monument and a cultural touchstone.
