Ali Pasha Tepelena was the Governor of Southern Albania from 1788 – 1822, was an Albanian warlord who is now celebrated for fighting the Turks.

Such was his reputation that while they were on their Grand Tour, Lord Byron and his friend John Hobhouse, in 1809, travelled to Tepelena to meet him and stayed as guests of his.

They stayed in Tepelena castle, which had partly been rebuilt and fortified by Ali Pasha. It has great views over the the river valley.

The main square in front of the castle is now called Lord Byron Square – Sheshi Lord Bajron, and there is  with a large plaque showing the poet in Albanian dress.
