The Koepelkerk is a distinctive domed church on Jansplein, right in the heart of Arnhem's city center. Even if you're not planning to attend a service or event, it's a memorable landmark to pass on a walking tour thanks to its unusual shape and prominent position among cafés and shopping streets.

Because the Koepelkerk is also used as a cultural venue, your experience can range from a quiet peek inside to a full evening concert. For the best views, approach from Jansplein to take in the symmetry of the building, then loop through the surrounding streets to connect it with other central Arnhem highlights.

History and Significance of the Koepelkerk

The Koepelkerk is a 19th-century church that became part of Arnhem's urban identity through its bold central-plan design and dome. Built in the late 1830s, it reflects a period when Dutch cities were reshaping their civic and religious architecture, often favoring clean lines and balanced proportions.

Architecturally, the building is known for its harmonious, symmetrical layout and the way the dome anchors the structure visually from multiple angles around Jansplein. That “recognizable at a glance” silhouette is a big reason it remains a favorite reference point for locals and visitors navigating the center.

Today, the Koepelkerk’s significance is also practical: it’s not only a place of worship, but a flexible space that hosts cultural programming. That adaptive use helps keep the building active, maintained, and relevant—so you’re visiting a living landmark rather than a static monument.

Things to See and Do in the Koepelkerk

Start with the exterior: the Koepelkerk’s dome and geometric footprint make it one of Arnhem’s most photogenic historic buildings, especially when you can frame it with the bustle of Jansplein. A slow lap around the building helps you appreciate how the design stays balanced from every side.

If you can go inside during an open moment or event, look for the sense of height and openness created by the central space beneath the dome. The interior experience tends to feel calm and spacious, which contrasts nicely with the lively square outside.

Finally, consider timing your visit around a performance. Reviews frequently mention concerts and special events, and the venue setting can make even a short program feel more atmospheric than a standard hall.

Is the Koepelkerk Worth Visiting?

Yes—especially if you enjoy architecture, city photography, or atmospheric concert venues. It's an easy, low-effort highlight to weave into a central Arnhem walking route, and the dome-and-square setting makes it feel like a true city landmark rather than a hidden niche stop.

Honest Pivot: If you only want attractions with guaranteed daily visiting hours and a museum-style experience, you may find the Koepelkerk too schedule-dependent. In that case, prioritize places with consistent opening times and treat the Koepelkerk as a “walk-by” landmark unless an event lines up.

What Other Travellers Say...

Reviews Summary

Reviews are very positive overall, highlighting the Koepelkerk as a striking domed landmark and praising how well the historic architecture has been preserved while supporting modern uses. Visitors often mention the atmosphere inside and enjoy it as a venue for concerts and special events. A common drawback is that access can feel limited or schedule-dependent, so you may not always be able to go inside unless there's a service or event.

"The Koepelkerk is a beautiful example of how a historic building can be preserved and adapted for contemporary use. The restoration efforts havesuccessfully blended the church's original architectural features with modern amenities, creating a space that is both reverent and welcoming...."

"Doesn't this church look familiar? It is very similar in design to the Koepelkerk in Amsterdam. The design was indeed copied, after the originalchurch that stood there was demolished in 1817. In 1839, the new church was built and soon housed the Yellow artillery riders, a division of the Dutch army. The building itself has seen some modifications through the years. Most notably are the columns that were raised by 1,5 meters. And if you want to arrend a church service on Sunday, you might just be on Dutch TV as the services are regularly televised...."

Families with Kids

For families, the Koepelkerk is easiest as a short, visual stop—kids can enjoy the “big dome” factor without needing a long attention span. Pair it with a snack break on Jansplein to keep the pace light.

If you attend a concert, check the program length and vibe first. Some performances are perfect for older kids, while others may be better suited to teens and adults.

History Buffs

History-focused visitors will like the Koepelkerk as an example of 19th-century urban religious architecture and how historic buildings are kept active through modern reuse. The setting on Jansplein also helps you read the city's development patterns.
